Major League Baseball hot stove: Dodgers, Reds make big deal

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers' massive trade with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday led to speculation that they were clearing room and payroll to make a run at Bryce Harper, but that still seems unlikely.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig, catcher Kyle Farmer, and starting pitcher Alex Wood to the Cincinnati Reds for starting pitcher Homer Bailey, prospects Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray, and possibly worldwide signing bonus money according to multiple reports. Puig will be owed several million this season in arbitration, Kemp is owed $21.5 million in 2019 and Bailey has two years remaining on the six-year, $105 million deal he signed with the Reds in 2014. Puig sent a thank you tweet to Dodgers fans Friday upon learning of his trade to the Reds.

The trade will open up room under the luxury-tax threshold for the Dodgers. Those numbers were put up primarily against right-handed pitching as he struggled against southpaws; Roberts' decision to use him in a platoon role was what left him upset in the first place. With all due respect to the latter three outfielders, Kemp and Puig are instant-upgrades, at least offensively.

Downs was the Reds' No. 7 prospect and Gray was No. 20, according to MLB.com. The Brewers came one win away from the 2018 World Series; the Cardinals have already added two All-Stars this offseason in Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew Miller; the Pirates won 82 games last season. The 19-year-old shortstop was selected 32nd overall by the Reds in 2017. The right-hander posted a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 12 starts at Greeneville of the Appalachian League.
