Magnitude 7 Earthquake Rocks Anchorage, Alaska

Sign Reads Kenai Mountains and Kenai Lake Alaska

In recent developments, it was announced that the tsunami warning had been cancelled.

Residents posted pictures and videos to Twitter of damage to their homes and stores - belongings knocked off of shelves, broken windows and pictures scattered on the floor.

All flights were halted for several hours at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, and some flights were rerouted to Kodiak, Fairbanks and Kenai.

Alaska Gov. Bill Walker provided a statement on the earthquakes, tweeting out that he has declared a state of emergency. Traffic throughout the region is said to remain snarled.

Anchorage, Alaska was rocked by a 7.0 natural disaster Friday morning, and with the Northwest region primed for a quake of its own, it provided us with an interesting glimpse into what could be coming sooner rather than later. Schools in Anchorage and Mat-Su will remain closed until Wednesday so officials can assess the damage.

Despite the damage, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated a low probability of fatalities Friday afternoon, and Ward said those in the community were coming together to help their neighbors clean up. Still, it says there could be $100 million to $1 billion in damage.

The quake was centered about 5 miles north of Alaska's most populous city and within a tectonic plate that causes the biggest earthquakes in the U.S. The rupture between the faults occurred in an area where the Pacific plate is slowly moving northwest and subducting underneath Alaska.

Senior center technician Michael Burgy says gauges are being monitored to determine if any underwater landslides have generated tsunami waves.

The Alaska Earthquake Center reported more than 150,000 earthquakes in Alaska over the last five years. Most goods come into Alaska via Anchorage.

The epicenter of the quake appears to have been about 8 miles from Anchorage, in the area of the Prince William Sound, but the shaking was probably felt throughout much of Alaska and even in parts of Western Canada, Ebel said.
