How did a volcano possibly trigger Indonesia’s deadly tsunami?

Indonesian Tsunami's Death Toll Rises to 222 as 848 People Are Injured & 28 People Are Missing

Doctors are working to help survivors and rescuers are looking for more victims from a deadly tsunami that smashed into beachside buildings without warning in the darkness along an Indonesian strait.

The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management said in a statement issued Sunday that at least 40 people have been killed and another 600 people injured on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra when the tsunami struck late on Saturday. That disaster killed more than 30,000 people, launched far-reaching tsunamis, and spewed so much ash into the atmosphere that day was turned to night in the area and temperatures dropped worldwide.

The Indonesian Medical Association said it has sent doctors, medical supplies and equipment, adding that numerous injured require orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery.

Child protection was also another key concern, both for local communities and the large number of tourist families who had been vacationing when the disaster hit, Siregar said.

The tsunami alert systems failed to detect this phenomenon and hence caught the victims by surprise, as evident from a viral video that shows members of an Indonesian rock band being swept away by a giant wave that hit the stage during the concert.

Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho says those numbers may still rise since not all affected areas have been reached.

Hundreds of military personnel and volunteers searched along debris-strewn beaches. Yellow, orange and black body bags were laid out, and weeping relatives identified the dead. Scientists said the high tide, coinciding with a full moon, may have contributed as well.

With Anak Krakatoa still rumbling, experts are warning that more destructive waves could slam the already-stricken areas in southern Sumatra and western Java - and with as little warning as Saturday's disaster. "Agencies are still continuing to analyze the root cause ... the Krakatau volcano continues to erupt, which could potentially trigger another tsunami".

And so on Saturday night, just over 20 minutes after the eruption, a wall of water 6 to 10 feet high hit the coastline of northwestern Java and southeastern Sumatra without warning, sweeping up everything in its path along the shoreline, including people, boats and cars.

Shocking footage has emerged of a person swept away in Indonesia's devastating tsunami.

The meteorology agency said that an area of about 64 hectares, or 90 soccer pitches, of the volcanic island had collapsed into the sea.

It continues to grow each year and erupts periodically although it is much smaller than Krakatoa.

Scientists said on Monday that the consensus, based on satellite images and the information available, was that the collapse of a portion of the volcano triggered the killer waves.

Physical losses included 430 heavily damaged homes, nine heavily damaged hotels and 10 heavily damaged vessels. Chunks of broken concrete and splintered wood littered the coast where hundreds of homes and hotels had stood.

The vast archipelago nation is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide. "Even under normal conditions, the roads in that area are poor", he said.

A destroyed vehicle is seen after a tsunami hit an area in Tangung Lesung, Banten province, Indonesia, Indonesia, December 24, 2018. A powerful quake on the island of Lombok killed 505 people in August.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo was scheduled to visit the area on Monday, less than three months after a quake-tsunami killed thousands of people around the city of Palu on Sulawesi island.
