Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush dies at 94

Late George H.W. Bush valued ‘constructive dialogue’ with Russia – Putin

His son George W. Bush later took over the White House, serving as President for two terms from 2001 to 2009.

Bush suffered from a form of Parkinson's disease and had been hospitalized several times in recent years.

As the last USA president to have served in World War II and the country's last Cold War leader, the end of Mr Bush's time in the White House marked the end of a political era. The announcement came from his son and former president George W. Bush, who expressed grief over Twitter, by writing that Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and he are saddened to announce that after 94 notable years, their Dad has died.

The statement concludes: "Our hearts ache with his loss, and we, with the American people, send our prayers to the entire Bush family, as we honor the life and legacy of 41".

Former President Barack Obama also issued a statement calling Bush 41 "a patriot and humble servant".

George HW Bush's passing comes just months after the death in April of his wife Barbara Bush.

He also served as a congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice-president. They had been married for 73 years. Being the youngest pilot in the navy when he began flying, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

Instead of joining his father in banking upon graduation from Yale University, Bush headed to bleak west Texas to break into the rough-and-tumble oil business.

In late 1989, Bush sent U.S. troops to Panama to oust strongman Manuel Noriega.

His presidency fell during a time of dramatic change as the Cold War ended, the Soviet Union broke up and the Berlin Wall fell.
