Canada reportedly arrests Huawei's CFO, plans to extradite her to the US

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

Canadian authorities have arrested the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies in Vancouver, B.C.

US Senator Marco Rubio - a cheerleader of penalties levied against Chinese telecoms firm ZTE for Iran sanctions violation - welcomed the action, citing what he described as Huawei's threat to US national security.

Canadian authorities have arrested Huawei's chief financial officer at the request of U.S. law enforcement.

It is understood a National Intelligence Law passed by China a year ago that obliges Chinese citizens and companies anywhere in the world to cooperate with its security services was one reason for the block.

Wanzhou, the daughter of the technology giant's founder Ren Zhengfei, faces extradition to the USA on suspicion that the executive violated US sanctions targeting Iran.

This story is developing.

The Globe and Mail reports that USA law enforcement agencies allege Ms. Meng tried to evade US trade embargoes against Iran.

Fellow Chinese technology giant ZTE had similarly been removed from the US trading blacklist at the start of a year ago by the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security following the company's guilty plea to illegally exporting products to Iran. The U.S. previously banned ZTE, a Huawei competitor, for violating similar sanctions.

Similar moves are under consideration in the U.K. The U.S., which believes Huawei's equipment can be used for spying, is contacting key allies including Germany, Italy and Japan, to get them to persuade companies in their countries to avoid using equipment from Huawei, the Wall Street Journal reported last week.

"The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng".

The arrest, while notable, did not come out of the blue.

The Chinese embassy in Ottawa has called for her immediate release.

A Huawei spokesman said Wednesday that Ms. Meng was arrested while transferring flights in Canada.

Sources previously told Reuters that United States authorities had been investigating Huawei for allegedly shipping products to Iran in breach of USA sanctions.

Huawei, the world's biggest network equipment maker ahead of Ericsson and Nokia, has said Beijing has no influence over its operations.

In 2011, the American government stopped Huawei from purchasing USA server technology company 3Leaf's assets, for national security reasons.

Skycom tried to evade United States sanctions against Iran and sell Hewlett-Packard computers to the country's largest mobile phone operator in 2010.

The news of the arrest broke today.

Huawei could not be reached for comment at the time of publication. Huawei has denied the links.
