Washington firefighter struck by vehicle while battling California wildfires

Smoke from the Woolsey fire shrouds parts of Malibu Calif. A firefighter from South Kitsap Fire and Rescue has been injured at the Woolsey fire

The number of people declared missing in one of California's catastrophic wildfires has more than doubled to 631, as the struggle continues to contain one of the biggest blazes the USA state has ever known.

"The chaos that we were dealing with was extraordinary", Honea said of the early crisis hours last week.

Many others found haven at an encampment that sprang up in the parking lot outside a still-open Walmart store in Paradise, where dozens of evacuees pitched tents or slept in their cars.

The list of people unaccounted for in the Camp Fire rose dramatically from 297 to 631 Thursday-and while many of them may be people who failed to contact loved ones after evacuating, authorities fear the death toll is also going to jump. Some 52,000 people have been displaced.

The firefighter is among the more than 100 firefighters from Washington state who have been sent to both Northern and Southern California to help with the deadly wildfires. Containment of the Woolsey fire grew to 57 percent.

President Donald Trump is set to visit the western state on Saturday to meet with victims of the wildfires, believed to be the deadliest and most destructive in the state's history. He was helping to contain the Woolsey Fire in Southern California.

The Woolsey Fire, located north of Los Angeles, has killed at least three people and destroyed 500 structures.

"The fact that we have thousands and thousands of people in shelters would clearly indicate that we were able to notify a significant number of people", the sheriff said.

"It's cold and scary", said Lilly Batres, 13, one of the few children there, who fled with her family from the forested town of Magalia and did not know whether her home survived. 56 people are now confirmed dead and many more remain unaccounted for.
