USA army ranger possibly died from friendly fire with Afghan forces

Three US service members killed in Afghanistan

Three U.S. service members were killed and three others were wounded by an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan, according to the NATO-led training mission in that country.

"Three U.S. service members were killed and three wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated November 27 near Ghazni city".

According to the statement, the injured soldiers have already been evacuated and received medical care.

No other details were immediately released.

President Donald Trump decided previous year to remain committed to Afghanistan, and about 15,000 US troops serve largely in a support role for Afghan security forces.

He spoke three days before Army Sgt. Leandro A.S. Jasso, 25, of Leavenworth, Washington, was fatally wounded in a firefight with al-Qaida militants in southwestern Nimruz province.

An initial review showed the soldier was "likely accidentally shot by our Afghan partner force", a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation statement said on Tuesday, adding that the "tragic" incident occurred as they engaged in a battle with Al Qaeda militants.

The city, which sits on the main highway linking the capital Kabul with Kandahar in the south, was overrun this year by a large Taliban force before it was driven off by Afghan and US troops after days of heavy fighting.

In the past several weeks, the insurgents also have launched assaults on villages in rural districts of the province that are populated by minority ethnic Hazara Shiites.

American-led combat operations against the Taliban officially ended in 2014, but some U.S. troops remain in the country to provide training and assistance to Afghan forces, which do most of the fighting.

"Sgt. Jasso was killed defending our nation, fighting al Qaeda alongside our Afghan partners", he added.

Their deaths bring to 13 the number of USA troops killed in Afghanistan this year.

General Scott Miller, the top U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commander in Afghanistan, said Jasso was killed "defending our nation, fighting Al Qaeda alongside our Afghan partners". Of those, 12 were combat fatalities, the most in a single year since the end of 2014, when most global combat troops were withdrawn from the country.
