Turkey 'patiently' waiting for Saudi insights into Khashoggi killing

Saudi 'kill team's' luggage contained syringes, scissors: report

The Turkish Government allowed US CIA Director Gina Haspel to listen to the audio recording of events that took place inside the consulate and to the telephone conversations that took place between the team and Saudi Arabia, a senior Turkish official said. "Saudi Arabia is a volcano and to try and push the Crown Prince out, we don't have any players [in Saudi Arabia] on our side, so we don't know what to do", Baer said.

"The recordings are really appalling".

Graham was skeptical of National Security Adviser John Bolton's comments Monday that people who've heard a recording of Khashoggi's murder don't believe it implicates Prince Mohammed.

"I have not listened to the tape myself, but in the assessment of those who have listened to it, it doesn't, in any way, link the crown prince to the killing".

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a contributor to "The Washington Post", who vanished on 2 October 2018 during a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The high profile of Khashoggi, a USA -based Washington Post contributing columnist, and the drip-drip of sensational leaks about his demise have provoked a global outcry and tarnished the reputation of the brash young prince, whose efforts to cast himself as a bolder reformer and trusted US ally have often chafed against his policies overseas.

Pressing ahead with moves to maintain pressure on Saudi Arabia, Erdogan said the crown prince had told Turkish envoys that he would shed light on the October 2 killing at the kingdom's consulate and do what was "necessary".

Last year, Saudi Arabia arrested dozens of billionaires and princes in a crackdown on corruption that the business community read as a shake-down. But, they added, United States and European officials are not certain to whom "your boss" refers. More recently, a government source familiar with the matter said Qahtani featured prominently throughout the recordings. Ankara insists the orders for the killing came from the highest levels of the Saudi government, but not King Salman.

He also supervised the brief detention, humiliation and beating of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri past year.

The Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah published photographs of equipment used by the assassination squad to kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside his country's consulate in Istanbul earlier this month. Reuters could not immediately verify the Sabah report.

He said the recordings related to the killing of the Washington Post columnist, which Turkey has shared with Western allies, are "appalling", Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

They include the killing itself and conversations before the operation which Turkey subsequently uncovered, the sources said.

The killing revived criticism of Saudi Arabia's role in Yemen's years-long civil war, whose consequences the United Nations declared the world's biggest humanitarian disaster.

Saudi Arabia has vehemently denied he had any knowledge of the operation, which authorities initially denied then said was an interrogation gone wrong.
