Trump sends mixed messages on tariff negotiations with China

US calls China’s tariffs on American autos ‘egregious’ | Idaho Statesman

The Leaders' Summit comes amid escalation in the trade war between the United States and China, a naval incident between Ukraine and Russian Federation and a growing pressure on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who is being suspected of ordering the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Wall Street edged lower on Thursday amid jitters over Trump's meeting with Xi.

The White House hasn't received an offer from China that encompasses the major issues that Trump wants to resolve, according to a person briefed by White House officials on Thursday, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Another official said Navarro's addition was meant to send a message to China about the administration's resolve on trade. He added that Putin is ready for holding talks with his U.S. counterpart.

A bilateral meeting between Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron is also being worked out. The two presidents plan to discuss the situations in Syria, Libya and Ukraine as well as United States plans to leave the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.

Overall, Trump's schedule at the G20 is in flux.

"As Prime Minister I will prosecute this case again at the G20, as I did at the APEC and [East Asia] summits". Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will be the special guest. According to Ushakov, Putin and Abe will discuss the establishment of а mechanism for negotiations on the Kuril Islands. In a stinging public rebuke, Pence warned against "roads to nowhere" and "constricting belts" when talking about infrastructure development in the region. The trilateral, which is the first-ever trilateral meeting, is an expansion of the bilateral talks between the USA and India, it is a part of the slew of meetings the United States would hold on the sidelines of G20 summit on November 30 and December 1. Saudi Arabia has said the prince had no prior knowledge of the murder.

Trump is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires this weekend.

"I think we're very close to doing something with China, but I don't know that I want to do it, because what we have right now is billions and billions of dollars coming into the United States in the form of tariffs or taxes".

While others in the administration are also clearly concerned about China's growing geopolitical influence and see its "One Belt, One Road" initiative as inimical to USA interests, Trump's perspective is narrower and more parochial.

Any sign that Trump will hold off on plans to ramp up US tariffs on Chinese imports in January may alleviate pressure on emerging-market and commodity-linked currencies, undermining the greenback and haven trades like the yen. Since then, the Trump administration has imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods with China responding by imposing reciprocal tariffs. U.S. steel company stocks dropped as China's steel sector slid into bear territory, with the benchmark rebar contract down more than 20 percent from its 2018 peak.

As the leaders arrived, Argentine security forces began locking down the central business district in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

Earlier this month, US Vice President Mike Pence was in Singapore to attend the East Asia Summit and in Papua New Guinea for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' summit.

The summit's agenda will continue on Saturday, December 1, with plenary sessions starting at 10.00 am local time, followed by a working lunch entitled "Embracing opportunities".
