Gusts of up to 80mph are possible as the storm moves across the United Kingdom, with forecaster warning the gale force winds could lead to damage and cause disruption to transport networks.

A spokesman for The Met Office said: "A very unsettled spell of weather is expected, with strong winds, combined with widespread and in places heavy rain".

The Yellow Warning in force across Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside comes into force at around 3am on tomorrow (Thursday) and runs until around 3pm on the same day.

Winds of 60mph are expected across western regions, but the strongest gusts are predicted in the far north of Scotland, with Shetland bracing for winds of up to 75mph through Wednesday and into Thursday.

Western parts of Britain, including Northern Ireland, south-west England, Scotland and Wales, are expected to bear the brunt of Diana's force on Wednesday.

"A spell of wet and windy weather is expected, with a small chance of very strong and disruptive winds". That moves over England during Thursday morning rush hour. With that, there will be some heavy bursts of rain.

Batten down the hatches because the country is set to be hit by a barrage of wind and rain rolling in from the Atlantic.

"Storm Diana will make its way towards the west and that will certainly beef up the rain".

"Check the travel news before you set off and take particular care where roads dip, for example under railway bridges, which are more likely to flood".

"Rain and the strongest winds will gradually retreat to the North East".

Finally, the national forecaster has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for the entire country warning of south to southwest winds of 55 to 65 km/h and gusts of 90 to 110 km/h.
