Snowstorm batters parts of Midwest, hundreds of flights cancelled

KQ2 Forecast: Blizzard Warning in effect for entire KQ2 Viewing Area

The Chicago Department of Aviation says average departure delays at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport are 77 minutes and the flight-tracking website FlightAware reports that just over 350 flights headed to or from the USA were canceled as of early Monday.

By Monday morning, many areas from the Plains to the Midwest will have seen 6 to 10 inches of snow, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories were in effect from central Missouri into eastern MI. At Midway International Airport, 124 flights had been canceled and 80 more were delayed.

The National Weather Service Quad Cities office posted a video of a weather balloon being released in a blizzard.

By midday, the blizzard warning was extended to parts of eastern IL and Chicago, where snow is forecast to fall at a rate of about 2 inches per hour.

The winter storm dumped 5.8 inches of snow at KCI Sunday, setting a record daily snow fall.

The storm is expected to wind down on Monday, though the National Weather Service warned that travel conditions would be rough through the morning in affected areas, including Nebraska, parts of Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. That included semitrailer trucks jackknifed across the highway. Travelers should look out for rain transitioning with little notice into heavy, wet snow on Sunday afternoon.

The treacherous conditions forcing the governor of Kansas to declare a state of disaster emergency.

Separately, a portion of Interstate 29 was shut down in Missouri, near the Iowa border.

The weather service posted some snowfall totals on Twitter Sunday night.

As much as a foot was expected in Chicago.

Planes were grounded at the airports in Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Winter Storm Bruce brought snow and heavy winds to the Midwest and Great Lakes before heading into northern New England early in the week.

The region could see whiteouts and slick roads throughout Sunday, making travel hard if not impossible at times, Brink said. He said rain will give way to heavy snowfall and "near whiteout conditions" that will make for unsafe travel.

As of Monday morning, several schools in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL have been forced to close as a result of the snow.
