Naval standoff: Vladimir Putin blames Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko

Trump Threatens to Cancel Meeting With Putin After Russia-Ukraine Naval Clash

The new S-400 systems will be operational by the end of the year.

On November 25, three Ukrainian naval ships breached the Russian state border in the Kerch Strait.

Russian ships rammed a Ukrainian tugboat and fired on two Ukrainian gunboats in the Sea of Azov on Sunday, causing tensions between Russia and Ukraine to reach levels not seen since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The United States and the European Union have both imposed sanctions on Russia over its conduct towards Ukraine since 2014, when Moscow seized and annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula after a pro-Russian leader was toppled in Kiev. The US mission to the United Nations said Russian Federation had committed "an arrogant act that the global community must condemn and will never accept".

Ukraine said its ships did nothing wrong and have every right to use the strait without Russian permission.

France and Germany, which brokered a ceasefire and tentative peace accord between Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, and Petro Poroshenko, the leader of Ukraine, in 2015, are understood to fear such a move could split the bloc and further inflame tensions. Putin said Poroshenko had done so in a bid to score political points ahead of Ukraine's 2019 presidential election.

All of the sailors face jail terms of up to six years if found guilty of what Moscow says was a plot to illegally cross the Russian border by trying to pass through the strait without advance notice and ignoring calls to stop.

"The Ukrainian ports on the Sea of Azov - Mariupol and Berdiansk - are effectively under blockade by the Russian Federation".

Two dozen Ukrainian sailors are being held in detention.

Mr Poroshenko has low popularity ratings.

The Ukrainian vessels - a tug and two gunboats - were trying to pass through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, but were refused access and chased into worldwide waters by 10 Russian vessels.

In the recordings, the sailors appear to admit to breaching Russian territorial waters.

What other reaction has there been?

Western governments have rallied behind Kiev, accusing Russian Federation of illegally blocking access to the Sea of Azov, used by both countries, and of using force without justification.

It called on Russian Federation to release the ships and their crews and respect Ukraine's sovereignty.

Namely, Petro Poroshenko wants the USA president to personally convey the message to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming G20 summit in Buenos Aires.

Poroshenko called on Germany, the largest and wealthiest buyer of Moscow's gas exports, to halt the building of an undersea gas pipeline that would allow Russian Federation to supply Germany directly, cutting out Ukraine.
