Trump won 58 percent of the state's vote in 2016, and Hyde-Smith has tied herself closely to his presidency. I am the candidate that wants to move MS into the future. More than 43,000 absentee ballots have been requested, and that number could increase as final numbers are tabulated.

Hyde-Smith's support of Trump is unmistakable. Joni Ernst, Hyde-Smith spoke to Republican stalwarts at a Meridian museum Sunday afternoon. Hyde-Smith's runoff election against Espy, a former congressman and US agriculture secretary, has been far closer than expected thanks to a series of racial controversies, including a photo that emerged of Hyde-Smith wearing a replica hat of a Confederate soldier, and a video in which she said she'd be "on the front row" if invited to a public hanging.

The Popular Information report also stated Charles B. Johnson, the co-owner of the Giants, recently donated $2,700, the legal maximum to Hyde-Smith; and his wife, Ann, also contributed the maximum to her campaign. Cindy Hyde-Smith earlier this month, the Major League Baseball has asked her campaign to return its $5,000 donation.

As a state senator in 2007, Hyde-Smith cosponsored a resolution that honored then-92-year-old Effie Lucille Nicholson Pharr, calling her "the last known living "Real Daughter" of the Confederacy living in MS".

Hyde-Smith should enjoy a decided advantage if she can convince McDaniel's voters to support her in the runoff election on November 27.

It appears that Hyde-Smith was attending school somewhere else when the Lawrence Academy opened, meaning she transferred there deliberately.

Espy is seeking an upset victory in a deep red state after Democrat Doug Jones edged Republican Roy Moore in a December 2017 special election to fill former Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Alabama Senate seat.

MS has a history of racially motivated lynchings and violence against people who sought voting rights for black citizens, and Hyde-Smith has been sharply criticized after two videos surfaced this month. She also posed in a photo wearing a Confederate hat and holding a rifle that made the rounds on Facebook, and it was just uncovered that she sponsored a resolution praising Confederate soldiers' "defending their homeland."

Tuesday's victor will finish the final two years of the term begun by Republican Sen. Thad Cochran. He resigned in April amid health concerns. The Washington Post reported that in 2001, Hyde-Smith introduced a bill as a state senator to rename a stretch of highway to what it had been called in the 1930s: the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway, after the president of the Confederacy.

President Donald Trump tweeted support Sunday for U.S. Sen.

In addition to her controversial comments, Hyde-Smith has also faced other accusations of racism as events from her past have surfaced in recent days. She also served for eight years in the MS state Senate, where she was chair of the Agriculture Committee.

Illinois Cox Littleton, 92, of Jackson, Miss., seated, went to the Hinds County Courthouse in Jackson on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, to cast an absentee ballot in a U.S. Senate runoff election. Even on trade and tariffs, where Trump's decisions could hurt MS farmers, Hyde-Smith praised the president.
