Ex-Trump campaign chair lied, broke plea agreement: Mueller

Paul Manafort

Prosecutors with special counsel Robert Mueller say that Paul Manafort breached his plea agreement by lying repeatedly as they questioned him in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States election.

"Manafort has provided information to the government in an effort to live up to his cooperation obligations", it said. They are now asking a federal judge to set a date to sentence him.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is accusing Manafort of lying to federal investigators in the Russian Federation probe in breach of his plea agreement.

Mueller's team did not spell out what Manafort lied about.

As a result, Manafort could be exposed to over a decade behind bars.

Manafort was convicted on 8 counts in September in the Eastern District of Virginia for failure to register as a foreign agent in light of his political connection to former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, alongside charges of tax-evasion, conspiracy and lying to federal agents.

Former U.S. Attorney Barb McQuade explained on MSNBC: "If he lied, he loses his value as a cooperator and the deal is off". "He's got one less witness today".

Mr Manafort, a longtime Republican political consultant who made tens of millions of dollars working for pro-Kremlin politicians in Ukraine, ran the Trump campaign as it took off in mid-2016.

In the plea deal, Manafort plead guilty to conspiracy against the US and obstruction of justice, related to allegations of witness tampering.

Mueller's office, in court documents filed Monday evening, claim Manafort 'committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters'.

"He believes he has provided truthful information and does not agree with the government's characterization or that he has breached the agreement", it says.

Manafort's plea agreement was supposed to cap his prison sentence to 10 years. He pleaded guilty a month later in Washington and began meeting with US investigators while he was locked up in jail. The cases that Mueller's team brought against Manafort largely focused on his Ukrainian political consulting work, his U.S. lobbying over the last decade and the financial management of his business proceeds. "If you do the reporting, I think what you're starting to see is a belief that he is not only cornered, but that national security is in real danger because of the way he is acting", he said.

Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday. "The president has opined on Twitter that he thinks Manafort has been treated unfairly, and he has pardoned others - including Sheriff Joe Arpaio - who he thinks have also been treated unfairly", CNN legal analyst and attorney Ross Garber explained.
