Driving through Paradise, California as the Camp Fire rages on

Evacuations ordered in Northern California as fast-moving wildfire spreads

The Camp fire swept through Paradise, California, on Thursday, with officials saying at least 1,000 structures were destroyed.

Paradise, located almost 145 kilometers north of Sacramento, was home to more than 26,000 residents, according to its website.

"Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire in order to protect life and property", the Chico Fire Department said in a tweet.

The town of Chico, population 93,000, could be next in the path of the wildfire, which was forecast to be driven westward overnight by 35-mile-per hour (56 km-per-hour) winds, said Butte County Fire Chief Darren Read.

"There are times when you have such rapid-moving fires.no amount of planning is going to result in a ideal scenario, and that's what we had to deal with here", Honea told the Action News Network.

The fire in Paradise was reported shortly after daybreak Thursday.

He said: "The town is devastated, everything is destroyed".

"There was really no firefight involved", said Capt. Scott McLean of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, explaining that crews gave up attacking the flames and instead helped people evacuate. In a single day, this Sierra Nevada foothill town founded in the 1800s was largely incinerated by flames that moved so fast there was nothing firefighters could do.

BFD spokesperson Keith May said BFD is sending one engine to assist the City of Oakland as its fire department responds to a fire on Highway 13, just south of Joaquin Miller Road. Evacuation zones were posted on Cal Fire's website.

Meanwhile, two wildfires burning near Los Angeles have forced thousands more to evacuate, including the entire city of Malibu. People reported seeing much of the community go up in flames, including homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement center.

"Things started exploding", said resident Gina Oviedo. 'People started getting out of their vehicles and running'.

Queues to leave the city have resulted in traffic jams and gridlock, which has led people to leave cars abandoned on roads as they rush to safety.

An undetermined number of civilians and firefighters have been injured and Maclean said earlier it could take days to determine the number of fatalities.

Acting California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area and requested a federal emergency declaration, saying that high winds and dry brush presented ongoing danger.

"Fire is now burning out of control and heading into populated areas of Malibu", town officials said in a statement.

People in Paradise, like so many in California, have become accustomed to wildfires, and many said they were well prepared. The Hill Fire in Ventura County torched 10,000 acres in six hours Thursday.

The "Woolsey Fire", in Ventura County sparked evacuation orders for parts of the city of Thousand Oaks, where a Marine Corps veteran shot dead 12 people in a country music bar on Wednesday night.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, who lives just north of coastal Malibu in Calabasas, revealed on Instagram that she was forced to flee her home.
