Donald Trump demands Mexico moves migrants from the USA border

US Mexico border

He vowed they will never enter America, and threatened to close the border permanently if necessary, to tackle the growing crisis.

Over the weekend, violent clashes occurred as the United States attempted to stem the flow of people crossing into the country.

- USA border agents fired tear gas on hundreds of migrants protesting near the border with Mexico on Sunday after some of them attempted to get through the fencing and wire separating the two countries, and American authorities shut down the nation's busiest border crossing from the city where thousands are waiting to apply for asylum.

USA border patrol agents used tear gas to force the crowd back and shut the crossing - the busiest on America's southern border - for several hours, though it was back open on Monday.

Democrats and other critics called the use of tear gas an overreaction, and questioned the idea of keeping the migrants in Mexico to make asylum claims there.

"[CBP] effectively managed an extremely unsafe situation involving over 1,000 individuals who sought to enter the United States unlawfully in large groups".

The migrant caravan at the U.S. -Mexico border consists of mostly men who are not "true asylum seekers", former Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan said Monday, adding that he agrees with President Donald Trump's threat to shut down the border if Mexico doesn't deport the migrants back to their home countries.

"The facts are, the policy written under President Obama allows us to use tear gas to disperse a crowd that was very risky", he told the network. Mexico's Interior Department said about 500 migrants were involved in the attempt to rush the border, while USA authorities put the number at 1,000.

"What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to border control agents and asking to seek asylum", Scott said.

The migrants have traveled through Mexico in large groups, or caravans.

For weeks before the 6 November congressional elections, Mr Trump raised the alarm about the migrant caravans and ordered some 5,800 United States troops to the border to support border patrol agents.

When they neared the second fence, USA border agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets at them as helicopters buzzed overhead.

"Mexico should move the flag-waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries", Trump said in an early morning tweet.

President Trump said he would not hesitate to close the border altogether if he feels the USA might be losing "control".

How should Mexico and the United States deal with the migrant issue? It is the most heavily trafficked land border in the western hemisphere.

Hundreds of people - including women and children - had been protesting and chanting "we aren't criminals!"

"This policy that we use was an Obama-written policy and it was used in 2013 at the same port of entry", he told CNN, wondering in particular about the intense media interest now versus then. In response, CBP deployed additional personnel to San Ysidro, California, on Sunday in expectation of demonstrations on both sides of the border.
