Bus crashes into river after passenger and driver fight

A crane salvages the wreckage of a bus after it plunged off a bridge into the Yangtze River in China's southwestern Chongqing early

Security footage from a bus which crashed into a river in China has revealed that the driver was fighting with a passenger moments earlier.

Rescuers lifted the wreck of the bus from the river on Wednesday night.

Video of the incident released Friday appears to show a passenger striking the driver in the face, prompting him to hit back before veering into oncoming traffic and barreling through barriers on the side of the bridge.

According to police investigations, the 48-year-old female passenger surnamed Liu had missed her stop, and asked the driver to stop on the road.

The first half is surveillance footage from the bus.

As she continued to assault him, the driver swerved into oncoming traffic and hit a auto before breaking through the crash barrier and plunging into the Yangtze River, the longest river in Asia. China's state newspaper, People's Daily, reports police have now say the fight was the cause of the crash.

The 42-year-old driver, surnamed Ran, told her to get off at an earlier stop.

In this file photo taken on November 1, 2018, a crane salvages the wreckage of a bus after it plunged off a bridge into the Yangtze River in China's southwestern Chongqing.

By Thursday, 13 bodies were found and identified, said the police. The driver turned his head back several times arguing. This seems to be the moment the driver realised he had lost control of his vehicle.

Another video, taken from a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, shows the bus swerving widely on the bridge and crashing through the barricades before its fatal plunge.

A Wanzhou police statement said the driver and the passenger broke the law with their actions because they seriously endangered public safety.
