At least 11 reported wounded as man fires shots into California bar

Shooting reported at California bar

Shootings of any kind are very rare in Thousand Oaks, a city of about 130,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Los Angeles, just across the county line.

Ventura County Star reporter Jeremy Childs arrived at the scene shortly after a shooter opened fire on Wednesday night.

The bar's website says its hosts "College Country Night" every Wednesday.

Many more people had more minor injuries, including some that came from their attempt to flee, Dean said.

Several people from inside the bar told TV stations that a tall man wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered first shot at a person working the door, then opened fire, seemingly at random, at the people inside.

Thirteen people have been killed, including the gunman and a police officer, in a mass shooting at a bar in southern California.

"It's a horrific scene in there". 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a passing highway patrolman were responding to several 911 calls when they arrived at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks at about 11:20 p.m., the sheriff said.

"He said he and others smashed their way out of the bar onto a balcony and then jumped down to safety".

A man who says he was in the bar tells ABC news reports that he saw a man shoot into the crowd.

Mr Dean said around 10 other people were shot and wounded. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. "There were probably 12 shots before I got out the front door".

Witnesses described a scene of panic in the bar when the gunman started firing.

"He shot a lot, at least 30 times".

That shooting was politically sensitive: the suspect, Robert Bowers, who said he wanted to kill Jews, argued that a Jewish advocacy group had been aiding a Central American migrant caravan denounced repeatedly by President Donald Trump in the run-up to Tuesday's midterm election.
