Tracking the Tropics: Development likely in the Gulf this week

Tropical wave could affect western Caribbean

Hazardous marine conditions in the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and high-risk rip currents also will continue to be a threat.

The storm system is expected to lift northward into the Gulf of Mexico.

On Saturday, this effect was in play as a broad area of low pressure stretched across Central America - which sometimes can help spin up a storm.

The latest guidance shows this system strengthening into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours and possibly tropical storm as early as Monday. Atmospheric conditions there are forecast to become more favorable for a tropical depression to form.

The tropical disturbance in the Caribbean became Tropical Depression No. 14 on Sunday, and the National Hurricane Center thinks the storm has a more muscular future. Some parts of western Cuba might get up to 12 inches of rain.

It seems that after the storm makes a potential landfall, it will quickly race north and east.

Rain chances will be on the rise next week. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a high probability of tropical development at 100%. Isolated to scattered showers will be possible each afternoon as tropical moisture streams into the region.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Leslie continues its easterly path across the central Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour.

NHC forecasters say that this general motion with some increase in forward speed is expected over the next few days.

Hurricane season runs through November 30.
