Senate Republicans Are Confident Kavanaugh Will Be Confirmed After Reading FBI Report

Donald Trump

Brett Kavanaugh has heard the complaints about his poor judicial temperament and on Thursday, the judge who last week said sexual assault allegations against him were a conspiracy launched by Donald Trump's enemies, attempt a mea culpa.

The Republican leader filed a motion setting up a Friday vote on whether to limit debate on Kavanaugh and move forward.

Collins said Thursday that the FBI appears to have conducted a "very thorough investigation" of the sexual misconduct claims against Kavanaugh.

Despite his performance, Kavanaugh said he can be counted on to be impartial as a judge.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifies to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill September 27, 2018 in Washington, DC. The Senate Judiciary Committee expected to receive the report from the FBI Wednesday evening. "It's been sent to the Senate, no White House editing", Shah said.

"There's nothing in it that we didn't already know", Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa said Thursday as senators are viewing the report in private.

BOOKER on Federal Bureau of Investigation report: "There is much in there that raises more questions" & there's "significant evidence" that "relevant witnesses" haven't been contacted.

A second Democrat who had been seen as a doubt, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, yesterday announced that she would be voting against Mr Kavanaugh's appointment.

But crucially, two key Republican senators who are yet to say how they will vote - Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME - made positive comments about the probe, which was taken by some to be a sign that they were leaning towards a "yes".

He urged his colleagues to confirm the judge.

As protesters brandished signs that read "Kavanaugh lies" and "Never again" outside the steps of the supreme court, senators huddled behind closed doors in the Capitol on the other side of the street to digest the findings of an FBI investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) spoke forcefully on the Senate floor Thursday morning, explaining why he's moving for a vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Almost 8 in 10 Republicans said they approve of how Trump has handled the allegations in the new poll, which was conducted before Trump mocked Ford at Tuesday night's rally. In the short term he could provide the decisive fifth vote for a conservative majority on the nine-member court. Kavanaugh denies the allegations. That means if just two Republicans voted against Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation it would be defeated, provided the party's political opponents all voted against.

Republicans expressed growing confidence that Kavanaugh would be confirmed by the Senate after a political battle that has riveted Americans weeks before November 6 elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from the Republicans. Republicans did not want to pursue whether Kavanaugh lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee about his alcohol use in high school and college. Ford alleged that while they were in high school, a drunken Kavanaugh pinned her down at a party and attempted to remove her clothes, covering her mouth when she tried to scream.

The President made fun of Dr Ford's inability to remember some details about what happened, news.com.au reports.

"An FBI supplemental background investigation that did not include an interview of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford - nor the witnesses who corroborate her testimony - can not be called an investigation", they said, adding that "those directing the FBI investigation were not interested in seeking the truth".
