Pep Guardiola Worries About Mendy Getting Into 'Serious Trouble'

Chris Hughton has lauded Pep Guardiola for his impact on English football

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has blasted France World Cup ace Benjamin Mendy abandoning treatment on his injured foot for a boxing fight in London.

Reacting on Mendy's slow return from injury, the former Barcelona manager, admitted he has taken time to speak with the ex-Monaco man, who is still battling his troublesome metatarsal. The unfortunate victim of some horrendous injury luck, Pep Guardiola has grown tired of how the Frenchman is spending all his available down time.

"I believe too much in that team, in those guys", he said.

And, much to Guardiola's frustration, the City manager admitted Mendy, who has played just 13 games for the club since joining from Monaco a year ago, arrived late for treatment and training on Sunday.

"We know what Brighton have done against United at home and they were so close to getting points in Anfield", Spaniard Guardiola added.

Despite De Bruyne's absence City have been as strong as ever collecting 19 points from their first seven games to see them placed joint-top of the table.

City are looking to kick-start their Champions League campaign that began with a shock 2-1 defeat to Lyon. Go to Anfield, win, lose, whatever. "Leroy was important, is important, will be important for us. No-one expects us to get anything from it, so that's normal and that pressure is taken off, but we want to do as well as we can". They lost the first game in the Carabao Cup (against Chelsea last week) but at Anfield they score a lot of goals, they don't concede.

Guardiola is under no impression that his team will have an easy match at the Etihad Stadium against a dogged Brighton team.

'If they beat us three times, they are a good side. "He has not recovered from what happened against Newcastle and we spoke about playing about 60 minutes and we were lucky he scored at the right moment". "We are going to try again".
