Nintendo Switch Console Sales Reach 21.74 Million Units Worldwide

Source Nintendo

By way of The Verge, we now know Nintendo's latest financial data, which includes the new milestone of 22.86 million units sold for the Switch. Quarterly sales, meanwhile, rose to ¥221 billion ($2 billion) from ¥220 billion, behind company estimates.

Traditionally, the final quarter of the calendar year accounts for a large portion of video game and video game hardware sales.

Nintendo reported earnings for its latest period today, and as part of that, the Japanese gaming giant also updated its sales charts for the Nintendo Switch console. The company has also sold 111.10 million software units for the Switch. Of course there were popular non-Nintendo titles made for the GameCube - hello, Resident Evil franchise - but the most popular games for the console were nearly invariably first-party. First up, we have Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee and Let's Go, Pikachu! on November 16, which is followed on December 7 by the system seller that is Super Smash Bros. In the last quarter, revenue grew to $1.96 billion compared to $1.95 billion for the same period a year ago.

Nintendo has released their results for the first half of the 2018 fiscal year, covering the period from April 1 - September 30th with focus on the period from July 1 - September 30. We must keep releasing new software.

For those wishing for more Super Mario Odyssey kingdoms, or Zelda story content, there might be a glimmer of hope, as Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said he wants to see more DLC for existing major titles on Nintendo consoles.

While both the Pokemon and Smash franchises have historically sold well on previous generation systems, they're both significantly outsold by Nintendo's Mario Kart franchise. The Switch is missing out on one of the strongest third-party lineups in years, including blockbusters like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which won't be available on Nintendo's device due to its limited graphical power.
