Indonesia's Lion Air has lost contact with airplane

Lion Air flight crashes after taking off from Indonesian capital Jakarta

Indonesia's disaster agency spokesman posted video of some debris on Twitter.

The pilot of a Lion Air flight that crashed into the sea on Monday morning was Indian national Bhavye Suneja, reported PTI.

The National Search and Rescue Agency said the flight ended in waters off West Java that are 30 to 35 meters (98 to 115 feet) deep. 178 adults, one infant and two babies were on board. The finance ministry said around 20 of its employees were on the plane.

Reports say no survivors have, as yet, been found.

The Indonesian rescue agency has been carrying out search operation since the crash and over 300 people, including soldiers, police and local fishermen have been pressed into action. It was not immediately clear how many casualties there were.

The plane was delivered in August and had 800 hours of flying time.

Lion Air was founded in 1999.

The plane lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff, according to the official.

The plane crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in Indonesia. The transport ministry said crisis centres have been set up Pangkal Pinang's airport and Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport.

Flightradar said it was a Boeing 737.

Initial data from Flight Radar 24 suggests the plane went down in coastal waters off Java.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago, is heavily reliant on air travel, but many of its airlines have a poor safety record.

Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation said there were 181 passengers, two pilots and five cabin crew on board, although officials have also referred to a total of 189 passengers and crew.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest and biggest airlines, flying to dozens of domestic and global destinations.

In February 2012, Lion Air placed an order for 201 of the in-development 737 MAX and 29 of the extended range 737-900 in a $22.4 billion deal valued at list price. Thus, the crash of the plane was not monitored by the Medium Earth Orbital Local User Terminal at the Basarnas [Search and Rescue] head office. In 2004, flight 538 from Jakarta crashed and broke up on landing at Solo City, killing 25 people.

Debris has been spotted including a passenger seat, Indonesian media have reported.
