First lady Melania Trump criticised for 'colonial' hat choice in Kenya

First lady Melania Trump pauses as she speaks to media during a visit to the historical Giza Pyramid

"I want to talk about my trip and not what I wear and that's very important what I do, what we're doing with USA aid, and what I do with my initiatives and I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear". She started her tour by arriving in Ghana earlier this week. "But I have my own voice and my opinions and it's very important for me that I express what I feel". Then, in Malawi, the first lady visited a primary school that has been struggling with high enrollment and donated 1.4 million books, school supplies, and soccer balls.

"She got to know firsthand the people of Africa and they loved and respected her everywhere she went", he continued.

The first steps of the visit of Melania Trump in Africa, presented as a "diplomatic and humanitarian", have not mobilized the crowds or aroused of genuine fervour. "And we want to show the world that we care".

She also addressed a press conference where she spoke on a range of issues including her husband's reputation in Africa and her fashion sense.

Mrs Trump was received by her Egyptian counterpart Entissar al-Sisi at the Cairo International Airport. After the readings, she was encircled by the singing children and danced some more.

But her defence has led to even more criticism for the American First Lady.

She was briefed on the children living at the house for babies.

She was welcomed by Egyptian First Lady Intissar Amer al-Sisi, an observant Muslim who wore an ankle-length blue dress and matching headscarf.

More news: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to visit Beijing amid tension

This incident did not seem to deter the first lady from approaching the elephants again.

Music accompanied by the beat of drums greeted her arrival at an orphanage in Nairobi, where a group of children dressed in bright yellow T-shirts and patterned bottoms escorted her up a driveway to the building.

She proceeded to dress nearly exclusively in tailored whites and tans (from a mix of mainly European luxury fashion brands), an aesthetic that really did make her look a bit like Jane Porter before she met that Tarzan chap. She gave in to the infectious beat by sashaying as she approached a bank of news cameras, nearly as if she was recalling her past life as a fashion model.

She went on to climb the Great Pyramid and enter its interior.

Her trip was also not without fashion controversies. Trump has twice tried unsuccessfully to slash USAID's budget by a third.

Now back in Washington, it is unconfirmed what is next on the First Lady's agenda.

She's right though. In an ideal world, the focus would be on the First Lady's initiatives and what she said and did, rather than what she was wearing.
