Facebook says attackers stole details from 29 million users

Hackers accessed data of 29 million Facebook users

The hackers - whose identities are still a mystery - accessed the names, phone numbers and email addresses of 15 million users, he said.

TechnologieLes information of 29 million accounts have been compromised in the latest hacking of the social network.

In September, Facebook had apologized for a "security issue", after discovering that hackers used a vulnerability in the platform's code to steal other users" "access tokens' and log into their accounts. First, Facebook is working with agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation to find those responsible, second, fewer accounts were actually impacted than thought, and lastly, the firm has set up a help page to show you how you were actually affected. "Of the 50 million people whose access tokens we believed were affected, about 30 million actually had their tokens stolen", said the network's statement.

That breach allegedly related to a "view as" feature - described as a privacy tool to let users see how their profiles look to other people. Starting with the accounts they controlled directly, the attackers moved to their friends and to their friends' friends, and so forth - each time by stealing the access tokens, Rosen explained.

San Francisco: Facebook said on Friday that an attack on its computer systems that was announced two weeks ago had affected 30 million users, about 20 million fewer than it estimated earlier.

One million accounts were affected but no information was gained.

Facebook said it is working with the FBI to investigate the biggest hack in its history. Facebook said it has turned off the "View As" feature as a security precaution. "It's not that their motivation is to attack Facebook, but to use Facebook as a lily pad to conduct other attacks". Ultimately this got them access to about 400,000 people. Between the Cambridge Analytica scandal and a number of smaller incidents that followed once Facebook started investigating all third-party apps using its APIs this past spring, as well as the newly disclosed vulnerability, the company is now facing heavy scrutiny over its data management practices. That expanded to "friends of friends", extending their access to about 400,000 accounts, and went on from there to reach 30 million accounts. The attack began on September 14, but Facebook only realized it was a threat by September 25. In additional good news, the company said hackers weren't able to access more sensitive information like your password or financial information.

This was clearly an intentional, malicious theft of user data from Facebook, and some of that data is very granular.

Even if the attackers had tried to use the tokens, they wouldn't have worked, Rosen said, the reason being that Facebook had invalidated all the stolen tokens on September 28.

News of the hack emerged on 5 October when Facebook said it feared 50m users had been affected.

At the time, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg - whose own account was compromised - said attackers would have had the ability to view private messages or post on someone's account, but there's no sign that they did.
