Boris Johnson calls on prime minister to ‘chuck Chequers’

Jeremy Hunt

Britain's Boris Johnson on Tuesday (Oct 2) launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan at a fractious party conference that came as Brussels pressed London for a compromise on leaving the EU.

He added: "I don't think this is a time to be talking about leadership challenges, it is a time to be supporting our Prime Minister as she takes forward this incredibly hard task of getting a deal with the European Union".

Ms May, when asked in a series of broadcast interviews earlier about Mr Johnson's expected intervention, said she had expected his speech would be a "lively" event but declined to make any personal criticism. She embraced the mockery...

The Conservative MP went on to add that he has not met another MP who thinks that Theresa May has the ability to lead the party into another election after "the last disastrous snap election".

A total of 48 letters from Conservative MPs need to be issued to trigger a vote of no confidence.

Launching an extraordinary attack on senior Conservatives, he continued: "When you see these insane notions of some Tory politicians of the last days: Boris Johnson, his latest invention, you have seen that?"

"The previous time he was insulting his wife, but this time it's something far more different: he's insulting not us, but millions of ordinary citizens who have lived under Soviet rule for so long".

And she will attempt to win over "blue collar" Tories with a fuel duty freeze, saying she will carry the policy into its ninth year as it is vital for "hard-working families" - not just for their pockets, but for their quality of life.

The councillor for Stratford-Upon-Avon was reacting to Boris Johnson's conference speech, which she said was "full of substance".

"A party not for the few, not even for the many, but for everyone who is willing to work hard and do their best".

He reiterated his call for Britain to leave the EU without a withdrawal deal and negotiate a trade agreement similar to the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

"I have no confidence in her delivering Brexit, but let's listen to the speech this afternoon".

But in her keynote speech in Birmingham, she will focus on her hopes for a brighter future after Brexit.

In her crucial conference speech, the PM will make a direct appeal to mainstream Labour voters disillusioned by Jeremy Corbyn's left-wing agenda to switch to the "decent, moderate, patriotic" Tories.

But with rumours circulating in Birmingham that the Prime Minister has a tickly cough, she will be hoping there is no repeat of the mishaps she suffered during her conference speech past year.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove - who unlike fellow Brexiteer Boris Johnson has stayed in the cabinet to defend Mrs May's Chequers plan - has said he is anxious about the prospect of a no-deal Brexit, something the government has not ruled out.

She has already said she has taken steps to ensure she speaks "strongly" this time round.
