As Kavanaugh faces questions, Graham seeks investigation -- into Democrats

State advocates condemn advancement of Kavanaugh confirmation

The FBI has finished interviewing Mark Judge, a friend of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was said to have attended a high school party in the early 1980s where a woman says she was sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh, Judge's lawyer said Tuesday. "Even the American Bar Association, which has previously rated Judge Kavanaugh as "well qualified" has called for an FBI investigation, where we could learn more information and other potential witnesses could be interviewed", Donnelly said.

"I want them [the FBI] to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion", Trump said on Twitter. That means if all the Democrats vote against Kavanaugh, Trump could not afford to have more than one Republican oppose his nominee, with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tie-breaking vote.

FBI investigators had not reached out to a third woman who said she witnessed Kavanaugh engage in "inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women in the early 1980s", her attorney, Michael Avenatti, wrote on Twitter early Sunday morning. He said he did not want the probe to become a "witch hunt" and that it should be completed quickly.

Kavanaugh and Ford appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, where they answered questions about the allegations. "The trauma for a man who has never had any accusations", Trump said. Kavanaugh vigorously denied the allegations.

Kavanaugh testified Thursday that claims of misconduct and sexual assault from 1982 are untrue.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the committee, agreed.

Kavanaugh has denied all allegations of sexual misconduct.

Republicans control 51 seats in the closely divided 100-member Senate and can not afford to lose more than one vote on confirmation.

The allegations surrounding Brett Kavanaugh and his Supreme Court confirmation process have drawn attention not often paid to Senate proceedings. The list, reportedly drafted by Senate Republicans, did not include former classmates who contradicted Kavanaugh's testimony about the extent of his youthful drinking and partying.

Kavanaugh's confirmation hinges on a handful of key Republican and Democratic senators who have not yet fully tipped their votes.

Flake said he would ensure it's a "real investigation", by the FBI as Democrats demanded that Trump give them a full readout of his instructions to the agency.

Not long after, Attorney Michael Avenatti brought forward allegations from Julie Swetnick, who claimed that Kavanaugh was part of a group of teenage boys who spiked the drinks of their female peers so they could incapacitate them. After huddling with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday, Flake told reporters that he has struggled with how to deal with the allegations against Kavanaugh.

They have seized on his angry performance before senators last week - when he said he was the victim of a "calculated and orchestrated political hit" motivated by Hillary Clinton's loss in the 2016 election - to suggest that he would not be an impartial figure.

The messages, obtained by NBC News, are the latest details to emerge as Democrats raise questions about his credibility and the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviews witnesses about accusations made by three women.

"What I said is let the Senate decide", Trump explained.

A Harvard Law School spokeswoman shared a message from Manning sent to students Friday, saying these had been painful, hard times for the nation and their community, with the battle over the Supreme Court confirmation bringing into sharp focus "questions about sexual assault, fair process, fitness and character for high office, the integrity of the political process, and more". "Or, that the FBI's investigation was not infinite or endless enough for their liking", McConnell said from the Senate floor. For the fact is, at Yale, and I can speak to no other times, Brett was a frequent drinker, and a heavy drinker.
