The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin will be remembered

Aretha has returned home

The Rev. Al Sharpton, in response to President Donald Trump's statement two weeks earlier after Franklin's death that she had worked for him, said: "She performed for you".

The formal part of the service stretching almost eight hours, the celebration of the life and legacy of the U.S. icon was packed with gospel, eulogies, music and sermons.

Thus far, however, there is no indication of discord among Franklin's family.

The roster for Franklin's funeral was packed with VIPs lining up to honor her contributions to American music and the civil rights movement. "Aretha came out of the bowels of our struggle". Although she suffered personal hardships, sorrows and tragedies, Aretha remained one of America's iconic gifts to the world. Ushers roamed the aisles with boxes of tissues. She also took a direct jab at President Trump and his campaign motto.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, a Democrat, and George W. Bush, a Republican, spoke about the six-term senator, at his request.

The Army tweeted that it wanted to pay tribute to a "musical icon and inspiration".

For Franklin's family, the loss was much more intimate.

Franklin died August 16 at age 76. "Nothing sounded better to me than the way my grandma sings".

Among the stunning and powerful performances was her dear friend Stevie Wonder offering comfort with his song. Franklin, for or example, embarked on an 11-city tour to raise money for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., offered to post bail for Angela Davis, paid college tuition for students, and even covered funerals costs for others.

"Aretha was on the battleground for 60 years", Jackson told the audience. He said he wasn't expecting to say goodbye.

"I'm sad today, because I'm losing my friend".

Moore's arrangement included a card that read, "You know I always adored and loved you to bits and pieces". One of her nieces accepted the role of executor, according to the Associated Press. It chronicles Aretha's life from when she was born and how the church on Hastings street, Detroit Michigan became the place where her career started.

He said Franklin lived "not without fear, but overcoming her fears". NPR's Cheryl Corley reports from Detroit. Franklin sang for Nelson Mandela in Detroit after he was released from prison. Walk in the light.

Meanwhile, tributes to Franklin continue to pour in from around the world. There was politics and humor but, most of all, music. This book was neither approved by Aretha Franklin nor did she cooperate for the book.

Former president Bill Clinton joked that he and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were "Aretha groupies". Her friend Greg Mathis, the reality show host and retired MI judge, recalled his last conversation with her. "She was rooted in the black church, she was bathed in the black church, and she took the black church downtown and made folks that didn't know what the Holy Ghost was shout in the middle of a concert".

Her coffin is to be entombed in Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery near the remains of her father; her brother, Cecil Franklin; and her sisters, Carolyn and Erma Franklin.

CORLEY: And the mayor brought the crowd to its feet when he said a popular park would be renamed for Franklin.

Before the golden casket was closed at the top of a service, Franklin's body could be seen dressed in gold sequins.

CORLEY: There were lots of bittersweet moments like that. This book tells the story of the legendary singer and describes her as not necessarily groundbreaking but someone who did what she does better and longer.

He finished his tribute by playing Franklin's song Think from his mobile phone and into the microphone. Singer Jennifer Hudson was reportedly handpicked by Franklin to play her in an upcoming biopic.

Respect: The Life and Times of Aretha Franklin.

SMOKEY ROBINSON: (Singing) I'll miss you, my buddy.
