Obama On New York Times Op-Ed: 'This Is Not Normal'

Trump White House

Trump also took aim at a book by investigative journalist Bob Woodward which, like the incendiary unsigned piece in The New York Times, offered a damning portrayal of the inner workings of his administration, sparking yet another White House crisis and putting the president on the defensive.

As the president was talking to reporters as he flew over Montana en route to North Dakota for a campaign stop, his predecessor was in Urbana, Ill., where he also commented on the anonymous author while offering a sweeping indictment of Trump and a call to arms for Democrats before the midterm election.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., offered one take.

Others questioned the author's integrity or credentials. The rate of leaks was seven times higher compared to the same period in the presidencies of Barack Obama and George W. Bush. "Adversaries like China can only be strengthened in trade discussions if they believe that some of our officials are undermining the American negotiating position".

Trump attacked the book as a "scam", and suggested hardening the country's "pathetic" libel legislation.

Carlson found the notion that staffers would try to sabotage an elected official's policies downright anti-democratic.

Calling the author an "anonymous coward" and a "gutless loser", Sanders tweeted the opinion desk's phone number, urging Trump supporters to ask about the identity of the writer, who criticized Trump's "amorality" and poor management skills.

Though the article was strongly critical of Trump, no classified information appears to have been revealed by the author or leaked to the newspaper, which would be a crucial bar to clear before a leak investigation could be contemplated.

The president addressed a group of sheriffs gathered in the East Room shortly after the Times posted the piece.

"But you know who does use that word?"

Trump then offered that the men and women in uniforms were "I guess, a little bit like me". And he was right that he does not get enough credit for the strong economy.

The Times piece, published on September 5, , has sparked the president's ire, leading him to tweet in all caps "TREASON?" and calling the author "GUTLESS".

The op-ed isn't the only thing that has sent the White House scrambling this week. But the president nonetheless finds them compelling enough to seek out the leakers of behind-the-scenes stories and quotes. The anonymous author prefers the title "steady state". "So, yes, I think we need to get to the bottom of it".

"I$3 t seems to me to be just an obvious attempt to distract attention from this booming economy and President Trump's record of success", he added.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said she wished Trump "would put the same vigor into getting to the bottom of what Russian Federation has been doing to our country in the elections".

While some conservative Trump allies on Capitol Hill have said they want to help the president identify the writer, Speaker Paul D. Ryan, said Thursday he is unaware of any role to that end that lawmakers could or should play.
