New York Jets Andre Roberts' tightrope touchdown against Detroit Lions

Intriguing Jets receivers can make Sam Darnold’s life easier

Darnold threw an interception on his very first National Football League play, and Detroit's Quandre Diggs returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions an early lead over the New York Jets on Monday night. The Jets are on the road set to face the Detroit Lions in Ford Field.

Lee's second interception led to Jason Myers' 32-yard field goal to make it 41-17.

Darnold connected with Quincy Enunwa for his second touchdown pass of the night to make it 24-17 before Darron Lee picked off Stafford to run in a 36-yard interception return for the score.

Andre Roberts had a tremendous game returning punts. The Jets intercepted Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford four times, backup Matt Cassel once and swarmed the Lions running backs every time they touched the ball.

While Darnold and the offense were finding their groove, the Jets defense was dominating.

Apparently, the Jets had a hint on where Stafford was throwing the ball. He was also the first quarterback to win his first start by 31 or more points since Tom Brady in 2001, per ESPN Stats & Info. But even when Lee and other members of the starting defense went up to Darnold after that play and told him he was going to be fine, that they had his back, they nearly felt like it didn't need to be said-they didn't get the sense that he needed that reassurance. Do you think we need more?

They scored 31 straight in the third quarter to pull away, sending Detroit's fans for the exits and setting off a jolly green party in the Motor City.

Detroit coach Matt Patricia, meanwhile, will want to forget his debut as an National Football League head coach. And as Bowles reminded, "It's a team going up there, so I don't worry about the confidence of the quarterback".

And if the Lions come out with unfamiliar packages to confuse Darnold, Bowles said the Jets will just adjust. NY completely buried the Lions in Detroit on Monday Night Football, and the exact moment it ended can be traced back to the third quarter. "Everybody studied." He said they were able to figure out their tendencies based on formation and signals.

Jets running back Isaiah Crowell gained 102 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Heading into this Week 1 matchup, the Jets will be without two key starting players. Johnson was evaluated after he intercepted a pass and fumbled after taking a hard hit from Detroit receiver Kenny Golladay. "He's got a lot of enthusiasm and he has a lot of respect for the game and the people around him". Defensive end Ziggy Ansah left with a shoulder injury. CB Darius Slay returned to play after leaving the field to be evaluated for a concussion.

Detroit is at San Francisco next weekend.
