Netanyahu, in United Nations speech, claims secret Iranian nuclear site

President Donald Trump dressed down Iran on Tuesday at a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, warning Tehran that it faced severe consequences if it defied the United States.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc is encouraging small and medium enterprises to increase their business with Iran.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during the United Against Nuclear Iran Summit on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Sept. 25, 2018.

"I imagine the corrupt ayatollahs and the IRGC were laughing this morning", Pompeo said, referring to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Britain, France and Germany - along with Russian Federation and China - had all pleaded unsuccessfully for President Donald Trump to remain in the six countries' 2015 accord with Iran on ending its nuclear program.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, speaking at the United Nations alongside Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, said the countries were still working out the technical details.

Five world powers and Iran late on Monday agreed to establish a financial facility in the European Union to facilitate payments for Iranian imports and exports, including oil - a key move sought by Tehran following the United States pullout from the 2015 nuclear deal and its reimposition of sanctions.

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash told Reuters at the United Nations General Assembly he was concerned by the public differences between the remaining European signatories to the accord - France, Britain and Germany - and the United States.

An outspoken opponent of the deal, Netanyahu has previously made allegations about Iran's nuclear activities that are hard or impossible to verify, including presenting a cartoon bomb to the General Assembly in 2012 warning of how close Tehran was to producing a nuclear device.

The US President has one again accused Iran of fueling conflict in the region, and seeking to develop nuclear weapon.

"The regime used new funds from the deal to support terrorism, build nuclear-capable missiles, and foment chaos", Trump said.

"What will bring a real solution to the situation in Iran and what has already stabilised it?"

US officials say they are ramping up pressure on allies and adversaries alike with a goal of shutting down all Iranian oil and gas exports by November 4, following Mr. Trump's decision to pull out of the global nuclear accord with Tehran in May. One is certainly the pressure that's put in place.

"As long as the deal serves our interests, we will remain in the pact", Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told reporters in NY. The Trump administration withdrew from the deal earlier this year.

Despite the protests of the European Union, a number of businesses including French energy giant Total and carmakers Peugeot and Renault as well as Germany's Siemens and Daimler have already suspended operations in Iran for fear of triggering U.S. sanctions. "We do not intend to allow our sanctions to be evaded by Europe or anybody else".
