Latest On Kavanaugh And FBI Investigation

A full Senate vote is expected next week

On Thursday, reports surfaced that two men have contacted the Senate Judiciary Committee this week to claim they, not Kavanaugh, were involved in the sexual "encounter" with Ford "that is the basis of her allegation".

"I can say this whole process has affected all of us", he said. But while doing so, Kavanaugh refused to say that he supported an FBI investigation when he was pressed by lawmakers on that panel.

Deborah Ramirez's lawyer, John Clune, said Saturday that agents want to interview Ramirez, who said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party in the early 1980s.

The other person named by Blasey Ford as having taken part in her attack, Kavanaugh's school friend Judge, said in a letter dated Friday that he would "co-operate with any law enforcement agency that is assigned to confidentially investigate these allegations".

Kavanaugh, making an appearance before the same Senate committee after Ford, denied the allegations.

He later tweeted support for Kavanaugh, saying "Just started, tonight, our 7th FBI investigation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh".

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee from Rhode Island, said he expects the FBI would provide adequate staffing for the investigation, with teams working in parallel to investigate separate allegations.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would consolidate conservative control of the nation's highest court and advance Trump's broad effort to shift the American judiciary to the right.

Flake told The Atlantic that he was moved by an impassioned plea by Sen.

Ford told the senators she believed Judge's employment records would help her better recall the time frame in which the alleged assault occurred.

The day after Christine Blasey Ford gave an emotional testimony, Republican Sen. After issuing his statement Friday morning, remained "unsettled" by the partisan rancor he was witnessing on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where multiple Democrats walked out in protest midway through Friday's proceedings.

"No, I haven't talked with anyone from that party", she said. She also said Ms. Keyser socialized with the other attendees, meaning Mr. Kavanaugh.

Rachel Mitchell asks questions to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, on Capitol Hill on September 27, 2018. It was not one of their more notorious parties, because nothing remarkable happened to them that evening. Jeff Flake of Arizona balked at voting for confirmation without it - a sudden turn that left Senate approval newly uncertain amid allegations of sexual assault.

Ford, a California psychology professor, has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teen- agers three decades ago. "But you'll never get me to quit". Kavanaugh said he was "100 percent sure" he is innocent. "As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week", the president said in a statement.

Other senators backed Senator Flake's request, including Republicans Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, as well as Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who has been viewed as a possible vote in favour of Kavanaugh.

Mr Flake, who had a pained expression when he made his request for an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe in the committee after forcing a brief delay in the scheduled vote, was supported by two other Republican moderates, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, both of whom have not announced whether they would support Mr Kavanaugh.

A U.S. official with knowledge of the matter said the FBI could complete an investigation within a week, but the timeline ultimately depends on what is involved, such as the number of interviews that need to be done and whether newly uncovered information needs to be followed up on.
