Kavanaugh’s Confirmation Odds Plummet Following Latest Allegations

Trump high court nominee denies new allegation as hearing looms

Speaking at the United Nations in NY on Monday, Mr Trump said Brett Kavanaugh is "outstanding", adding: "I am with him all the way".

On Sunday, Deborah Ramirez, a former classmate of the now-Supreme Court nominee at Yale in the 1980s, told the New Yorker that he put his genitalia in her face during a party.

An adviser to Christine Blasey Ford - who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault during their teenage years - allegedly said in July that a "strategy" would "emerge" in the ensuing days and weeks to defeat Kavanaugh. "I look forward to testifying on Thursday about the truth, and defending my good name-and the reputation for character and integrity I have spent a lifetime building-against these last-minute allegations".

Christine Blasey Ford has belatedly levied unsubstantiated claims of sexual assault against Kavanaugh amid his Supreme Court confirmation process.

"Such grotesque and obvious character assassination - if allowed to succeed - will dissuade competent and good people of all political persuasions from service", he said.

The developments could also determine the fate of Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation, which hangs on the votes of a handful of senators.

An aide to one of the senators investigating the story said, the "allegations seem credible and we're taking them very seriously". Despite revelations of Dr. Ford's identity, the Ranking Member and Dr. Ford's attorneys to date still have not publicly released a copy of the original version of the letter or shared it more broadly than the 21 members and senior staff of the Judiciary Committee. Ramirez alleges Kavanaugh shoved his penis in her face and exposed himself to her at a party in college.

The White House, which called Ramirez's allegation "the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats", reportedly does not plan to withdraw Kavanaugh's nomination.

Kavanaugh said in a statement issued by the White House that the alleged incident described by Ramirez "did not happen".

Ford's lawyers said in a statement on Sunday: "Despite actual threats to her safety and her life, Dr Ford believes it is important for senators to hear directly from her about the sexual assault committed against her".

Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump's pick for the Supreme Court, and his wife, Ashley, are speaking out to Fox News in an exclusive interview Monday on the sexual misconduct accusations that have threatened to derail his confirmation. The White House and President Trump are fully backing Kavanaugh.

Judiciary spokesman Taylor Foy complained that Democrats "actively withheld information" from the Republicans.

Kavanaugh has emphatically denied all accusations, leveled at him.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, wrangled with Ford's lawyers for the last week over the exact terms of her appearance.

Like Ford, Ramirez says she has "significant gaps in her memories" about the alleged event, but sat and racked her brains for a week, with her lawyers, and felt confident reporting it, 35 years after the fact. They note that neither the accusers nor news organizations have found people willing to provide corroboration, even though both women have named people who they said were present at the alleged incidents.
