Justin Rose savours world No 1 status after runner-up finish

Woods' 66 kept him within touch of the leaders on day three

Justin Rose enters the final round at 17 under, one shot up on Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.

Woods didn't win the BMW Championship, which finished Monday due to a rainy weekend, but on two separate occasions he drew within a stroke of the lead.

Keegan Bradley prevailed Monday at rain-soaked Aronimink Golf Club to beat Justin Rose in a playoff to win the BMW Championship.

If the event is shortened, Rose would be the victor and full World Ranking points, FedEx points and prize money would be allotted to the field. He made that for par to finish the third round in sixth place, three shots out of the lead.

On Sunday, the PGA TOUR and the grounds crew at Aronimink did everything they could to get players on the course.

Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson and Scott Piercy tee off at 8:40 am EST.

But his achievement was then slightly overshadowed following a disappointing additional hole at the Aronimink Golf Club which saw him edged out by victor Keegan Bradley. But it helped him finish 20th in the FedEx Cup points, meaning a spot in the 30-player Tour Championship next week. Only six players shot worse in the second round. While that was certainly possible - he missed three birdie putts inside of 15 feet, and made two bogeys after finding bunkers - it was a lot to ask on a miserable day. Spieth started at 27th in the FedEx Cup standings and took a step backward, finishing with a 73 to tie for 55th.

Woods was referring to the special exemption that he was sure to get and unlikely to need in order to play in the championship he's won three times.

Even though Woods prefers tougher conditions this is the second time over the last month he's almost gotten it done in a birdie-fest, including the PGA Championship at Bellerive. "The quest to get better is what I really wake up for in the morning. and what gets me out of bed". It was the first time he had won since becoming a father.

He had to rally for a 66 on Saturday, and while he was 11 shots out of the lead, another round would give him a chance to move back into the top 30, avoid violating a new policy and save the PGA Tour a headache. Because he didn't add to his schedule a tournament he had not played in the last four years, he is in violation of the PGA Tour's scheduling policy.

That means he will have played only 24 tournaments this season.

"We are trying to play today and if we do play and happen to get finished so be it but the weather doesn't look promising", White said.
