Hurricane Helene has Britain in its sights

Joyce forms in the Atlantic

"We can not stress this enough, Florence poses a very serious threat to people who live far away from the coast", said a National Weather Service tweet late Tuesday.

Some coastal flooding is possible in areas of onshore winds.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Helene has 90 miles per hour winds, meaning it is a Category 1 storm. They are also watching Tropical Storm Isaac, which is heading due west and expected to enter the Caribbean Sea on Thursday.

Two high pressure ridges are still expected to be strong enough to force Florence to stall just before, or after, it makes landfall somewhere near the North Carolina/South Carolina border early Friday.

- Isaac is now a strong tropical storm over the Central Tropical Atlantic.

He said as far as the National Emergency Planning Organisation is concerned "we are taking no chances and we are leaving no stone unturned in respect to the preparation of the state, the country and its citizens for this incoming weather system".

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham says damaging winds and rain could begin hitting the coast late Thursday, pushing a storm surge that could reach 13 feet in places.

"Isaac is a small hurricane and uncertainty in the forecast is greater than normal", the National Hurricane Center reported Monday at 11 a.m.

Less rain is predicted for St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. Strengthening is forecast through Wednesday.

Hurricane Florence weakened to Category 2 storm overnight, but with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour, it was within 1 miles per hour of Category 3 and the wind field is expanding. Earlier forecasts showed that the storm was slated to directly hit around North and SC.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe, while a tropical storm watch is in effect for Antigua, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, and Saba and St Eustatius.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) provided the latest update on Hurricane Florence at 8 a.m. on September 12. A steady stream of vehicles filled with people and belongings is moving inland.
