Health Department investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the Bronx

'Cluster' of cases of Legionnaires' disease confirmed in Surrey

Legionnaires' is a type of bacterial pneumonia that is contracted by breathing in small droplets of water in the air which contain the Legionella bacteria.

According to the Public Health Service of Canada, Legionnaires' disease, which is not contagious, is caused by exposure to Legionella, a bacteria found naturally in soil and water.

The Health Department is scheduled to inspect the internal plumbing supply in the affected building, but officials say they do not consider this an outbreak or to be related to cooling towers at this time.

Twelve people have been infected during a Legionnaires disease outbreak in Hampton Beach, N.H. One of the individuals has died.

Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there were 6,100 cases in 2016. All 14 likely acquired Legionella at the end of July or beginning of August in a localized area of Hampton. Groups at highest risk for Legionnaires' disease include people who are middle-aged or older, especially cigarette smokers, people with chronic lung disease or weakened immune systems and people who take medicines that weaken their immune systems (immunosuppressive drugs).

"Federal, state and local authorities are working cooperatively and diligently to address this situation and help mitigate any additional health risks", Gov. Chris Sununu said Thursday.

Another disease which has made its presence felt for quite some time in the U.S. is the one caused due to West Nile virus, which has resulted in around a dozen communities in Boston-area being listed as high-risk, after a fourth-case of the virus was discovered.

Legionnaires' disease can not be spread from person to person. The disease is not contracted through swimming or drinking water. A spokesperson said there have been fewer than 10 cases reported.

"When a report comes in, we have a protocol that we follow which includes interviewing with the person that is ill or was sick and ask them a series of questions to determine where the exposure could have happened", Martin said.
