(TSLA.O) has reached a fever pitch, with the news that two senior executives are leaving Elon Musk's electric-car maker emerging hours after he smoked marijuana during a podcast interview streamed live online.

Additionally, the group's chief accounting officer Dave Morton submitted his resignation today after working there less than a month.

Tesla Inc shares fell almost nine percent on Friday as the resignation of its chief accounting officer after just a month at work spooked investors amid another social media storm around billionaire chief executive Elon Musk.

Musk was recently under fire after tweeting that he was planning to take the company private, provoking several lawsuits "alleging market manipulation" and a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Since I joined Tesla on August 6th, the level of public attention placed on the company, as well as the pace within the company, have exceeded my expectations", Morton said in the filing. "As a result, this caused me to reconsider my future", Morton said in the filing.

Elon Musk has continued to self-inflict PR disasters one after another, and not only that, but there is a disturbing trend of top talent bailing out on the automaker. Tesla shares went on another rollercoaster day of trading.

Tesla has long struggled with high turnover involving its senior executives, and its finance team in particular has gone through a period of significant tumult.

The yield on the company's 2025 bonds has blown past 8.5 per cent to a new peak; it was less than 7 per cent only a month ago. CFO Deepak Ahuja retired in 2015, only to return a year ago when his successor, Jason Wheeler, quit after just 15 months.

Sure, the prospect of Tesla CEO Elon Musk smoking a joint with Joe Rogan, while wielding a samurai sword and a flamethrower as the two talked about artificial intelligence, is enough to give your weird second cousin who just discovered Wikileaks an erection so big it could blot out the sun.

Musk shrugged but said nothing.

The appearance was the latest unorthodox move by Musk, who has often surprised investors with brash and unpredictable behavior as Tesla has sought to live up to lofty manufacturing targets for its Model 3 electric auto. "It's very hard to keep a auto company alive". In an interview with Bloomberg Television, he called for the company to split up the chairman and CEO jobs.

A request Friday for an interview with Musk for this article, through Tesla's media affairs office, had not received a reply.

Among the other moves Musk announced, Kevin Kassekert, who had been vice president of infrastructure development after managing construction of Tesla's battery gigafactory, is becoming vice president of people and places, making him responsible for human resources, facilities, construction and infrastructure development.
