Donald Trump threatens $267bn more tariffs on Chinese goods

Earlier on Friday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told Bloomberg Television the administration would evaluate public comments before making decisions on the $200 billion tariff list.

In a tweet, Trump said there's an "easy solution" to Apple's potential woes that also came with a tax break: "Make your products in the United States instead of China".

Trump tells reporters on Air Force One that his plans to slaps taxes of up to 25 percent on Chinese imports would depend on the choices made by that country's leaders.

"That changes the equation", he added.

"China seems unable or unwilling to announce major liberalizations that could be termed "confidence building measures" or "down payments" on expected near-term reforms", Craig Allen, president of the Washington-based U.S.

And Mr. Trump said he's winning the escalating battle over trade policy between the US and China, but said he has more trade sanctions in the works.

But the higher cost of wages in the United States could offset the benefits Apple might gain by avoiding tariffs affecting its products manufactured in China.

Kudlow, who heads the National Economic Council, told CNBC the administration was still talking with China about trade issues but so far China had not met U.S. requests. "We want lower (trade) barriers across the board", Kudlow said.

It has demanded that China better protect American intellectual property, including ending the practice of cyber theft.

The administration has already imposed tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese products, and Beijing has punched back with tariffs on $50 billion in American goods.

Wu Baiyi, director of the Institute of American Studies at the state-run China Academy of Social Sciences, downplayed any impact of a new NAFTA deal on U.S.

The August surplus with the US was larger than China's overall surplus of $27.91 billion for the month.

The company said the tariffs would "show up as a tax on U.S. consumers" and "increase the cost of Apple products that our customers have come to rely on in their daily lives". "Now, they've got to treat us fairly", he said, and again threatened to impose duties on cars produced in Canada.

"I don't think this magnitude of tariffs has been priced into the markets", Lara Rhame, chief US economist at FS Investments, told Bloomberg Television in an interview. Fitness tracker maker Fitbit said it would be hit by tariffs, and chipmaker Intel Corp said the levies could slow down the adoption of 5G networks, the next generation of wireless data technology for phones and other devices.
