After 4 Back Surgeries, Tiger Woods Wins His First Golf Tournament

Tiger Woods wins TOUR Championship, but Justin Rose holds FedEx Cup

Tiger Woods may have grabbed the headlines after winning his first title in five years at the Tour Championship, but it was Englishman Justin Rose who pipped his rival to pick up the most lucrative prize on offer Sunday.

Woods, who returned in January after missing nearly the entire previous two years with a debilitating back injury, held a three-shot advantage heading into the final round.

One year ago, while recovering from a fourth back surgery, he still had no idea if he could come back to the highest level of golf.

The 42-year-old Woods won the Tour Championship event at East Lake, Georgia, USA today by two shots over Billy Horschel.

The American icon is convinced fellow American Woods is good enough to target another four or five majors over the next decade after ending his five-year title drought in stunning style to lift the Tour Championship on Sunday.

"I spent 25 years playing professional golf with Tiger Woods on the scene, and any time he does anything great, that's a story".

"The 80 mark is a big number", he added. "It was neat to be part of the team, to be a part of helping the guys in any way I possibly could to make them feel comfortable, to get them into the right circumstances to allow them to play their best golf".

As Woods returns to the winners' circle on the PGA Tour, it's revived hopes that he can challenge again at a Major and attempt to catch Jack Nicklaus 18 Majors record anew. I just didn't know whether this would ever happen again. Not only did we see Woods walk up the 18th fairway swarmed by thousands of people, but we also saw someone whose personal win was a win for golf overall. That was when he was regularly winning multiple times every season, compiling trophies at a rate never before seen in golf.

"You know, he won yesterday as an individual, and I know how much that means to him and how important it was, but he's flipped that page pretty quickly and is really excited to join his teammates and move forward in that process".

"It was just a grind out there", Woods said of his final round. "Just went for a little chunk-and-run, and I didn't try and play the lobber all the way back to the flag".

Just a year earlier, in fact, he was rated No. 1,199 among global golfers, and he'd just wrapped up a fourth back surgery - no small feat for a man who makes a living on the golf course. He finished the tournament at 11 under par to take home his 80th victory, two shy of Sam Snead's record.

Even President Trump noticed that Woods was playing well. The victory also came with a $3 million bonus for finishing second in the FedEx Cup.

Woods looked destined to surpass Nicklaus when he clinched his 14th major at the 2008 US Open before his career hit the rails after a sex scandal and then a debilitating back injury.
