A 'devastated' Michelle Guthrie departs the ABC

Michelle Guthrie

"I wanted to continue the transformation of the ABC and to support the great work of ABC's dedicated and passionate employees to ensure our continuing trust, quality and distinctiveness as the source of Australian culture, conversations and stories", she said.

She is considering legal action after being kicked out of the job two-and-a-half years into her five-year term.

In an internal email to staff, the ABC said the board had given "long and detailed consideration to this serious matter".

Michelle Guthrie has been dumped as the ABC's managing director, after the board decided it "was not in the best of the interests" of the broadcaster for her to finish her term.

ABC chairman Justin Milne said yesterday the decision was made in the "long-term interests of our own people and the millions of Australians who engage with ABC content every week".

After a tumultuous 12 months for the ABC, the public broadcaster has announced that current managing director Michelle Guthrie will exit the business.

"I recognise the challenges involved in transitions of this kind, but I am honoured to accept the board's invitation and look forward to working with our outstanding people to execute our strategy", he said.

"I am devastated by the board's decision to terminate my employment despite no claim of wrongdoing on my part", she said in a statement on Monday.

And she rejected Communications Minister Mitch Fifield's suggestion that the ABC could easily accommodate the latest 1 per cent efficiency divided required by the government.

Sally Neighbour, executive producer of 4 Corners, tweeted: "excellent decision".

David Anderson, a 30-year ABC veteran, will be acting managing director while a formal search for a replacement begins.

He said the decision to sack the managing director was not a reflection on the selection process when she was appointed as Mark Scott's successor.

The former Google executive said at no time had her plan to modernise the ABC come under fire, and that she had been effective in delivering on her state goals of shaking up Aunty.

"At no point have any issues been raised with me about the transformation being undertaken, the "Investing in Audiences" strategy and my effectiveness in delivering against this strategy".

Mr Milne also said Ms Guthrie's relationship with the Government "could have been better".

He said it was an honour to lead the corporation.
