Trump claims shoppers need to show ID to buy groceries

Rep. Ron De Santis is a candidate for governor of Florida

Or will the President find it impossible to transfer his appeal to candidates like Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, who is running a campaign in Trump's image in Florida's gubernatorial primary and who basked in the President's endorsement on Tuesday?

Trump had been railing against the idea of allowing noncitizens to vote, saying, "Only American citizens should vote in American elections". He was trying to tell supporters that tighter laws would stop people who aren't US citizens from voting, and in his argument added that people need IDs for most other things. "You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID".

Although photo identification is required for some purchases, such as alcohol or cigarettes, by and large, it's not.

The war of words intensified between two titans in Republican politics on Tuesday as President Donald Trump trashed the conservative billionaire Koch brothers as a "total joke in real Republican circles".

Trump also criticized Democrats who oppose his nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, and said voters need to elect more Republicans.

Susan Stearns directed much of her anger toward U.S. Senate candidate, Florida Governor Rick Scott.

Then he reads a story to one of the kids, who sits in his lap as he holds a copy of then-businessman Trump's book "The Art of the Deal" and utters this line: "Then Mr. Trump said, 'You're fired.' I love that part". While the Kochs refused to endorse Trump's first presidential run, the president's loyalists don't want his 2020 re-election campaign bogged down by lingering bad blood.

Trump also trumpeted Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Ron DeSantis, a staunch defender of the president against the Mueller probe looking into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

"I'm not like other politicians", he said.

DeSantis is running against Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam in the state's August 28 GOP gubernatorial primary.

"And after while, you forget, who's the senator?"

Trump's freakish and inaccurate claims in support of the laws certainly won't help win much additional support on the issue.

"We've got a message for lawmakers across the country". The immigrant from the African country of Senegal became a USA citizen in 2007 and voted for Obama in 2012 before becoming a Trump backer.

Campaigners against voter ID laws say they disproportionately affect minorities and poor populations, often discouraging or prohibiting them from voting.

For many, Trump's claim brought to mind reports of President George H.W. Bush expressing amazement upon seeing a supermarket scanner during his 1992 reelection campaign.
