"Totally Legal": Trump Admits His Son Met Russian Lawyer In Election Year

Mr. Trump made the comment in a tweet on Sunday morning that was meant to be a defense of the June 2016 meeting and the role his son Donald Trump Jr. played in hosting it. Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner expected to get dirt (and would have "loved" to, as Trump Jr. said) but instead the Russians talked about other matters - sanctions and adoptions.

The President also reiterated on Sunday his assertion that there was nothing improper in his son accepting a meeting with someone he believed to be a Russian government lawyer prepared to deliver him "dirt" on Clinton as part of a Russian campaign to support Trump.

The president tweeted on Sunday an admission to his campaign colluding with Russians to obtain damaging material on Clinton, though he continued to deny personal knowledge of the meeting.

United States commentators have argued that Mr Trump's new admission that the meeting was to gain information about Mrs Clinton shows that the earlier statement was misleading.

The Post reported a few weeks later that Mr Trump Jr's initial misleading statement had been dictated by Mr Trump. Trump's disclosure came in response to a story that he was increasingly concerned about the possibility of Russian Federation probe by the FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller zeroing on his son who was part of a meeting that was purportedly claimed to be about adoption. "Trump Jr. appears to have knowledge of the foreign source and is asking to see it", Rick Hasen, a campaign finance law expert, wrote on his blog a year ago.

While "collusion" is not mentioned in US criminal statutes, Mueller is investigating whether anyone associated with Trump coordinated with the Russians, which could result in criminal charges if they entered into a conspiracy to break the law, including through cyberhacking or interfering with the election.

On Sunday morning, Trump responded to reports in the Washington Post and on CNN that he was concerned Donald Jr. could be in legal trouble.

Later Sunday, Jay Sekulow, one of the president's lawyers, defended the 2016 meeting. We also know that Hillary Clinton paid through.a law firm, eventually Kremlin connected sources, to gather info on Donald Trump.

"And we've seen 1.4 million documents, we've provided 32 witness interviews of any type of collusion on behalf of the president and the Russians".

Trump's tweet reveals that he lied a year ago when he personally dictated a statement, released by his son, Donald Trump Jr., which claimed the meeting was mostly about US adoption of Russian children.

A senior Republican lawmaker on Sunday urged Trump to acknowledge to Americans that Russia's interference in US elections is still a threat, something Moscow denies.

Giuliani acknowledged that this week's further stalling of a decision could irritate federal investigators, who have been talking with Trump's lawyers for months about interviewing the president.

Moreover, contrary to Trump's assertion, there are extremely strict federal laws prohibiting foreign nationals from getting materially involved in USA elections. Giuliani has stalled on whether the president will sit for an interview with Mueller, attempted to move the goalposts by emphasizing that "collusion is not a crime", and even employed dramatic facial expressions to suggest that it's Mueller's team, not the White House, that's being kooky and unreasonable.

The president has said many times he would be willing to speak with Mueller, but plans to await his legal team's guidance. Dowd subsequently resigned from the Trump team.

He called the "Fake" media "very unsafe and sick".
