Oscars introduce new award for outstanding popular film

Oscars Oscar Academy Awards Placeholder

This is likely to get out of the way of some of the other awards ceremonies that take place around that time.

The motion picture academy has made the biggest changes to the Oscars since expanding the Best Picture category from 5 nominees to 10 back in 2009.

A three-hour Oscar telecast. Read the full message to Academy members below.

Now, to point 1: By promising to bring the broadcast in under three hours, the Academy is seeking to address the chief, perennial criticism lobbed at it by critics, the public, and late-night comedians - namely, that the Oscars telecast is a bloated, overlong exercise in Hollywood navel-gazing.

The Oscars are adding a new category to honour popular films and promising a brisk three-hour ceremony on a much earlier air date of February 9, 2020.

While none of the 24 awards will be axed completely some will be shifted to commercial breaks.

The letter said the academy plans to "create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film", adding that eligibility requirements and other specifics "will be forthcoming". Specific details about eligibility have not been revealed, but one has to wonder if films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception, or The Martian may no longer be Best Picture candidates. The 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23.

This change passed the voting process, which signifies how important it is to make the Oscars broadcast more appealing to a wider range of viewers.

The 91st Oscars telecast remains as announced on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

"We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world", president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote in an email sent to Academy members. What we do know, though, is that the Academy has just taken a major step in the direction of focusing more on blockbusters, which are often viewed as a kind of art form unto themselves.

The addition of a popular film category caused the most chatter Wednesday morning, as a clear effort to attract a larger audience by honoring bigger and more seen films. Would they have been too popular for the official Best Picture category?
