Michael Jordan says "I support LeBron James" after Trump insult

Donald Trump

First Lady Melania Trump showed support for LeBron James' I Promise School in Akron, Ohio hours after President Donald Trump slammed James' intelligence in a Friday night tweet.

But in yet another blow for the President, Jordan came out in support of James, saying he's "doing awesome work for his community".

President Trump insulted LeBron James on Twitter late Friday, writing that CNN's Don Lemon "made LeBron look smart, which isn't easy to do". The interview also covered an announcement by LeBron James Family Foundation and the Akron (Ohio) Public Schools about a new elementary school for at-risk children, ESPN reported. He added that he loved National Basketball Association greats James and Michael Jordan, as well as former Denver Nuggets player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.

On Saturday night, the president took to Twitter to bash James following a Monday night interview James did with CNN's Don Lemon.

It's unclear whether James intended his Saturday tweet to be a response to Trump.

"U bum", James said in the now-famous tweet. LeBron publicly criticized Donald back in September 2017 when he called him a "bum" in a tweet for cancelling his invitation to the Golden State Warriors to celebrate their championship win at the White House.

To the sporting world and largely beyond, he's King James, but to President Trump, LeBron James is no intellectual genius. The sports commentator Bill Simmons tweeted: "LeBron is a smart dude (and one of the most thoughtful athletes we have) - this is a bullshit tweet and feels more than a little racist". "Maybe you'd like to talk about the 160,000 kids who skip school every day for fear of being bullied, or that 280,000 students are physically attacked in schools every month", Grisham told CNN.

James didn't pay any mind to hate and continued to share his joy over the I Promise school. Their history includes trading barbs when Trump revoked an invitation to the White House for the Warriors.

Someone else commented: "Lebron's school will make a more powerful and positive impact in more people's than Trump could ever dream of". "We are in a position right now in America, more importantly, where this whole - this race thing - is taking over".
