Mendocino Complex: Another day of successes, setbacks

North California wildfires expand to more than two-thirds the size of LA

In Northern California, the Mendocino Complex fire is now the fourth-largest fire in California history, with more than 266,000 acres burned. That follows the deaths of two firefighters and four civilians.

Ayeta is the seventh person to die in the destructive fire that has been burning for two weeks near Redding, where armies of firefighters and fleets of aircraft continue battling the huge blaze about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of the OR state line.

Twin wildfires fueled by dry vegetation and hot, windy weather have continued to grow near Clear Lake in Lake and Mendocino Counties.

In his first tweet about this summer's California wildfires, President Trump blamed environmental laws for making the blazes worse by preventing firefighters from using a "massive amount of readily available water". That fire, which is now 43% contained, has destroyed more than 1,000 homes and burned over 160,000 acres. They made good progress on dozer line running from the Eel River northeast to below the community, and are looking for opportunities to place indirect line across the northern edge of the fire.

The global fire teams were to arrive in Redding, California, on Monday, said Cal Fire Director Ken Pimlott.

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling the wildfires across California. The Mendocino Complex Fires, which have killed two people, have grown to a combined 273,664.

At the southeastern end of the fire, where it began, the area has been burnt out and mopped up, and no fire threat remains, which allowed for the opening of Hwy. 20.

The SAFD hopes its crew will help in the fight, adding to the more than 4,700 fire personnel who are now battling the Carr Fire.

Farther north, crews gained ground against a deadly blaze that has destroyed more than 1,000 homes in and around Redding. Jerry Brown's Presidential Major Disaster Declaration request to help impacted communities in Shasta County, where the Carr Fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes and buildings. The Federal Coordinating Officer for recovery operations in the affected area will be named will also have authority to recommend additional Major Disaster area designations for other counties including Lake, Mendocino and Napa if warranted by Federal Emergency Management damage assessments. It was almost halfway contained, Cal Fire said.

They have been deployed to fires in the Pacific Northwest and California.

The Ranch Fire was 225,001 acres with 21 percent containment and the River Fire was 48,663 acres with 58 percent containment. However, it is not so according to the water and wildlife experts. It's unclear if this is directly connected to the fire, but PG&E has been doing work to rebuild and restring power lines in the areas where the fire hit, so it's entirely possible that a line may have been de-energized as part of this continuing work.

"The water that reaches the ocean is what's left after we've diverted most of the water away for cities and farms, and what little is left is barely enough for California's aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries", he said.

"Time and again, we see vivid boundaries between the young, healthy, growing forests managed by state, local, and private landholders, and the choked, dying, or burned federal forests", McClintock said.
