Melania Trump’s parents sworn in as USA citizens

Melania Trump's parents are sworn in as U.S. citizens

Melania Trump's parents may have used "chain migration" processes to obtain their citizenship, the same policy that President Donald Trump want to kill.

First lady Melania Trump's parents are finally United States citizens after years of living under communist rule in Slovenia.

President Donald Trump's Slovenian in-laws became United States citizens on Thursday through "chain migration", a programme he has repeatedly denounced, in which adult American citizens can obtain citizenship for their relatives. Now that the couple are US citizens, it's important to note the president's hypocrisy when it comes to immigration policies.

He has often criticised the family-based immigration system at his rallies, calling it one of the "dumbest laws on immigration in the world" which is a pathway for terrorists to enter the country.

.

She attended high school in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling. It's unclear when the Knavses obtained permanent residency in the USA, the Times reports, but Wildes said they met the five year requirement. Homeland Security Police also escorted the Knavs both in and out of the ceremony, which was held at a federal building in Manhattan.

Their ceremony was private for "security reasons", attorney Michael Wildes said.

Mrs Trump's parents, a former vehicle dealer and textile factory worker, are Slovenian immigrants who had been living in the U.S. as permanent residents.

Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and political commentator, tweeted, "I guess when it's Melania's Family, it's "family reunification" and should be applauded". That type of family visa is exactly one of the categories that Trump and his allies have tried to repeal, saying they are harmful to the US.

Melania Trump became a US citizen in 2006 after marrying Trump the year before.

It is unclear as to when or how the couple received green cards.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building. She was in Bedminster, New Jersey, at the Trump National Golf Club, where Trump is now staying.

Viktor is 74, two years older than President Donald Trump.

Viktor Knavs was a vehicle salesman in the Slovenian town of Sevnica, while his wife Amalija worked at a textile factory.
