Kalaignar Karunanidhi, tallest Dravidian leader, who shaped political narrative of Tamil Nadu

#JustIn: Kaliagnar M. Karunanidhi Passes Away At 94

In 2014, his party contests the election alone and loses.

According to the statement released by Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, the Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital in Chennai at 6:30 PM on Monday, the next 24 hours are crucial and will determine the prognosis based on how he responds.

"We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide", it added.

Karunanidhi, who led his party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for about 50 years, was in hospital since July 26 for age-related ailments including urinary tract infections. After the DMK chief's death was announced and when news spread that the Tamil Nadu government had refused to allot a space on Marina Beach as the leader's final resting place, party workers started shouting slogans condemning the government's decision. Many were seen weeping and chanting slogans hailing the leader. However, it lasted only for two years as he was dismissed by the then Prime Minister Chandrasekar on charges of helping the LTTE in the state. Later, he founded Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram.

In a series of tweets, Modi said: "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi".

Mr Karunanidhi was born in 1924. In 2016, DMK became the largest Opposition party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

By his 20s, he was making his way into politics, growing close to C.N. Annadurai, the founder of the DMK. Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan had said Karunanidhi will not be buried by the Anna Memorial on the beach, Puthiya Thalaimurai reported.

Like his mentor Annadurai, Karunanidhi used his writing skills to further the ideology of the Dravidian movement through Tamil cinema.

In 1974, about 14 years before the Union government's Sarkaria Commission studied Centre-state relations, the DMK government under Karunanidhi passed a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on state autonomy based on the recommendations of the Rajamannar Committee.
