John McCain: a fighter in war and politics

John Mc Cain became an outspoken critic of Donald Trump

According to a statement from McCain's office, he died Saturday at 4:28 PM, adding.

Senator McCain's colleague John Kerry, the Democratic candidate for president in 2004, asked him to be his running mate - Senator McCain refused. "My family and I send prayers for Cindy and the McCain family". "At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years".

"He was a giant".

"Senator John McCain stood for an America that was a reliable and close partner that - because of its strength - shouldered responsibility for others and stood by its values and principles even in hard moments", wrote Germany's foreign minister Heiko Maas.

He died at his Arizona home. "I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning", she wrote on Twitter. "I think go ahead criticize his politics, but you bring up that military service, you slam him as a vet, and I'll defend him as aggressively as I defend my own kids".

That began a five-and-a-half-year nightmare inside a prison where Vietnamese soldiers, upon learning that McCain was the son of an admiral, set out to use him for propaganda purposes.

Hanoi residents held a memorial at the lake on Sunday, leaving flowers to remember the man who "fought for peace in many countries, including Vietnam", as one onlooker told the Associated Press.

In November 2016, voters elected him to his sixth term in the Senate.

He was admitted earlier that month to Walter Reed National Military Center for treatment of side effects from chemotherapy and radiation to beat glioblastoma, a terminal and aggressive form of brain cancer.

President Trump offered his "deepest sympathies and respect" to the McCain family.

Bush was among those expected to speak at McCain's funeral.

That moment appeared to cement McCain's reputation as a politician with a fierce independent streak, although his overall voting record shows he was more partisan than his public image.

"John McCain's life is proof that some truths are timeless".

Eight years later, here was a man who openly professed his love of money, who had avoided military service because of a foot problem he later said had healed itself, a man who bragged about greasing the wheels for his NY real estate empire by donating to both Democrats and Republicans, a man who, in short, unapologetically flouted the long-established traditions of American politics and the presidency.

In Washington, flags on Capitol Hill and the White House were lowered to half mast in his honor.

"John McCain was an Arizona icon, an American hero and a friend", the Suns wrote.

As McCain watched Gould's groceries getting scanned and bagged, he commented on some of the prices, saying they reflected "the increasing cost of energy" and how that was putting a strain on families.

McCain entered the Naval Academy in 1954, soon after graduating from a prep school in Alexandria, VA.

A politician, servicemember, husband and father, McCain was known for his strength of character and service to the U.S.

After completing flight school in 1960, the young naval pilot married his first wife, Carol Shepp, five years later.

The force of the ejection was so violent, McCain broke his right leg and both arms. The president said he liked those who were not captured better. He was severely injured and taken prisoner.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Mr McCain's lifetime of public service had been "an inspiration to millions".

In his 2018 memoir, "The Restless Wave", he lamented the current political climate of hyperpartisanship and emphasized the importance of compromise in governance. Our hearts are with his wife, Cindy, his children, and his grandchildren.

McCain, a Republican, won an Arizona House seat in 1982.

McCain said in September that his doctors had given him a "very poor prognosis".

As a young politician he was tempted by the lure of power and money, caught up in an influence-peddling scandal that almost cost him his career.
