Five key trends of the Premier League transfer window

Klaassen played just seven Premier League games for Everton after signing for £24m last summer

Premier League clubs were scrambling to complete deals before the end of the transfer window on Thursday, with teams including Fulham and Everton among the most active.

The figures released showed that top-flight clubs spent an estimated £1.23 billion before Thursday's pre-season deadline - down £200 million from last summer's window.

Despite slashing a club record £60 million on signing Riyad Mahrez, City have enjoyed a quieter window after spending over £200 million last summer on assembling a squad that smashed a host of Premier League records in romping towards the title.

The only addition to the north London club in the new season is a new stadium and even that won't be ready for the first month - at least.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been one of the more outspoken critics of the shortened window with time running out for Spurs to make a single signing this summer.

Likely to sit the deepest in his manager's preferred midfield three, Sarri will be hoping the midfielder can exert similar influence on his new side having made more passes than any other player in Europe's top five leagues last season.

Yet, based on the World Cup performances of Golden Boot victor Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen among others, there is still plenty for Mauricio Pochettino to look forward to.

And City defender Kyle Walker epitomised the squad's hunger for more silverware by cutting short his post-World Cup holiday to return to training ahead of the Community Shield.

There was a certain amount of cash available to spend on Jack Grealish, who would have lessened some of Christian Eriksen's creative burden, but Aston Villa quickly made it clear a deal could not be done even though the player was believed to be keen.

Barcelona defender Yerry Mina joined Everton as prohibitive agent demands put off United and no offer is understood to have been tabled for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld.

Title contenders Liverpool and Chelsea were the top flight's two biggest spenders this summer, albeit the latter's investment amounted to just two major signings: £72m goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and £57m midfielder Jorginho.

The deadline also applied to English Football League clubs - although they can still sign free agents and loan players until 31 August. The former Barcelona and Inter Milan rightback has committed to a four-year contract with Brighton, with the move subject to worldwide clearance.

Mourinho had an unlikely ally in Moyes who is still looking for a new job after he left West Ham United last season.

And if Klopp does not deliver a trophy this season and they don't progress into the latter rounds of the Champions League, then he may find it hard to hold on to his job.
