A Canyon County man has tested positive for the West Nile Virus, marking the first human case in the state this year, Southwest District Health officials said Thursday.

The patient, an adult resident of the northeastern part of the county, was hospitalized and is recovering from the illness, officials said.

The Department of Public Health and Wellness said in a release that surveillance traps in three local zip codes turned up infected mosquitoes including 40212, 40213, and 40214.

"We are detecting more West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes, including those that readily feed on humans, than is typical for this time of year", said Dr. Philip Armstrong, Medical Entomologist at the CAES. "Of the mosquito-borne diseases, West Nile virus is the most common one in the continental United States".

Experts say most people who are infected have no symptoms or experience only mild, flu-like symptoms. Use an approved repellent according to its label.

Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies when outdoors. Clothing should be light-colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin. It's also a good idea to wear long sleeves or trousers when outside.

More information about insect repellents can be found here.

Use of commonly sold insect repellants, like those using DEET, Picaridin, or other EPA-registered repellants, can also cut down on mosquito bites, and possible exposure to the virus.

But the latest report from the state Department of Health this week announced the death of a Brown County resident from virus-associated causes, with a total of 10 human cases in South Dakota.

It is also recommended to help stop mosquitos from breeding by getting rid of standing pools of water in places like bird baths, wading pools and water bowls for pets. West Nile fever was first noticed in India in 1956 and a study published by the NIV in 1973 had mentioned the presence in Kerala.
